MIAC Men's Golf Athlete-of-the-Week

The Saint John's men's golf team and junior standout Ryan Gallagher (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) came up big with a clutch performance in their home tournament over the weekend. Gallagher shined all weekend - particularly over the final nine holes - to earn medalist honors will leading his team to a first-place finish at the SJU Fall Invitational. For his performance, the MIAC sports information directors honored Gallagher Wednesday with the MIAC Men's Golf Athlete-of-the-Week award.
Gallagher put himself in great position to get the win over the opening 18 holes at Blackberry Ridge G.C., as he fired a 1-under-par 71 to open the tournament. After going 2-over on the front nine of the final round, Gallagher went 2-under on the back nine to finish with an even-par 72, and 1-under par for the 36-hole tournament. His score of 143 was good for medalist honors by two shots among a talented field of 110 golfers. Gallagher led Saint John's to a team score of 591 (+15) and a first-place finish in the 20-team field. This season, Gallagher leads SJU with a 74.7 scoring average, which is tied for the sixth-best average in the MIAC.
The Johnnies and Gallagher have one more big tournament left on the fall regular season schedule prior to the MIAC Championships. SJU will compete in the Twin Cities Classic on Sept. 26-28, with an 18-hole round each day at the Links at Northfork (Jordan, Minn.), Elk River Country Club (Elk River, Minn.) and Ridges at Sand Creek (Jordan, Minn.). The MIAC Championships will be held the following weekend, Oct. 3-5, at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids, Minn.

Sydney Busker, St. Catherine

It was a historic weekend for the St. Catherine University women's golf team and breakout rookie Sydney Busker (Detroit Lakes, Minn.). Busker finished in a first-place tie individually at the Division III Classic with her 18- and 36-hole scores both ranking among the best in school history. She led the Wildcats to a third-place team finish, and the program's second-best 36-hole score. For her performance, the MIAC sports information directors honored Busker Wednesday with the MIAC Women's Golf Athlete-of-the-Week award.
Busker got off to a great start at the Division III Classic, which included all 11 MIAC teams among the 17 in the field, by shooting a 3-over-par 75 on day one, which is the third-best 18-hole score in Wildcat history. She finished with a 5-over-par 77 to finish in a tie for first with a two-day total of 152, which tied teammate Abby Conzemius for the best 36-hole score in school history. She helped St. Catherine finish third as a team with a two-day total of 637, which is the second-best 36-hole team score in the history of the program. This season, Busker leads the Wildcats with a 78.2 scoring average.
The Wildcats and Busker have one more big tournament left on the fall regular season schedule prior to the MIAC Championships. St. Catherine will compete at the College City Challenge on Sept. 26-27 in Hastings, Minn. The tournament will consist of an 18-hole round each day at Bellwood Oaks Golf Club.
