Rapid City, S.D. / Stevens
Gustavus delivered one of the signature moments of the 2013 MIAC football season Saturday when it stunned No. 18-ranked Saint John's 23-20 in double overtime. The Gusties' special teams were certainly special in the upset victory, led by junior Thomas Schleusener (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens). The Gustavus kicker and punter split the uprights on the game-winning field goal in double overtime to cap an 11-point afternoon. For his clutch performance, Schleusener was named the MIAC Football Special Teams Player-of-the-Week.
Schleusener had a great day in the kicking game for Gustavus, as he was 3-for-4 on field goals - including the huge game-winner from 37 yards out - and 2-for-2 on PATs. Schleusener's only miss came at the end of regulation on a game-winning attempt, but he redeemed himself by nailing a field goal in both overtime periods to help his team defeat the Johnnies for the first time since 1997. It was also Gustavus' first win over a ranked opponent since 2008. He also contributed mightily to the field-position battle, as he punted six times for a 38.2 average with three inside the 20 and two fair catches. This season, Schleusener's 45 points rank third among MIAC kickers, as he's 6-for-11 on field goals and 27-for-30 on PATs.
Thanks to its big win, Gustavus continued to be one of the MIAC's most pleasant surprises in 2013 with a 5-3 overall record and a 3-3 mark in conference play. The Gusties will try to secure a winning season Saturday with another big home game on the schedule. Gustavus will host Carleton at 1 p.m. in St. Peter, Minn.
