BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – For the second consecutive year, two MIAC programs rank in the top 10 of D3football.com's annual Preseason Top 25. St. Thomas (12-1 in 2016) comes into the year ranked fifth in the nation while Saint John's (10-2 in 2016) is No. 10.
St. Thomas enters the 2017 campaign with 23 consecutive regular season victories – the third-longest active streak in all of college football. The Tommies, who came up three points shy of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in last year's NCAA Division III Playoff Quarterfinals, have also strung together 20 straight home games with 30 or more points to go along with 10 consecutive regular season road victories.
Saint John's is fresh off its third straight trip to the second round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs joining Linfield, Mary Hardin-Baylor, Mount Union, Wesley and Wheaton as the only programs do have advanced that far in each of the last three seasons. This is also the Johnnies' third consecutive Top 10 appearance in D3football.com's preseason poll.
Seven teams in the West region were ranked in D3football.com's Top 25, including five in the top 10: Wisconsin-Whitewater (No. 3), Wisconsin-Oshkosh (No. 4), St. Thomas (No. 5), Linfield (No. 9), Saint John's (No. 10), Wisconsin-Platteville (No. 15) and Redlands (No. 25).
The D3football.com Top 25 is voted on by a panel of 25 coaches, sports information directors and media members from across the country, and is published weekly throughout the college football season.
