Plymouth, Minn. / Benilde St.-Margaret's
The Saint John's men's team topped the leader board from start to finish at the 2013 MIAC Men's Golf Championships to capture the conference title. Leading the way for the Johnnies was a brilliant individual effort from Brett Draxler (Plymouth, Minn./Benilde St.-Margaret's). The junior's consistency over the three rounds helped him win individual medalist honors and headline the All-Championship Team. For his performance, Draxler was honored further with the MIAC Men's Golf Athlete-of-the-Week award.
Draxler opened the three-day, 54-hole championship with the second-best 18-hole score of the tournament - a 3-under-par 69 - to start in second place. He moved into the lead with a 2-over-par 74 on day two, and finished off his individual MIAC title with a 3-over-par 75 on the final day. His total score of 218 (2-over-par) was good for a five-shot win and his All-Championship Team selection, which will also result in automatic All-Conference honors in May. Draxler's score helped the Johnnies shoot 898 as a team (287-309-302) and win the title by eight strokes. This season, Draxler's 74.9 scoring average ranks third in the MIAC.
Thanks to the conference title - which is Saint John's first since 2010 - the Johnnies will receive the MIAC's automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships, which will be held May 13-16, 2014, at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C. The Johnnies are currently ranked 10th in the nation in the GolfWorld/Nike Golf Division III Coaches' Poll.
