Sartell, Minn. / Cathedral
The St. Olaf cross country team hosted its fall invitational over the weekend, and certainly enjoyed the home-course advantage. Not only were the Oles the top scoring Division III team in the field (second place overall), but sophomore Grant Wintheiser (Sartell, Minn./Cathedral) ran to a first-place finish, recording the best time on the 8K course to best a field that included 295 individuals. For his performance, Wintheiser has been named the MIAC Men's Cross Country Athlete-of-the-Week.
Wintheiser's winning time was 25:36.0, which was more than 10 seconds faster than the runner-up. MSU-Mankato's Josiah Swanson. Wintheiser was the only Division III runner in the top five, nearly 30 seconds better than any other MIAC or Division III competitor. He led the Oles to a great team showing as all five of St. Olaf's scorers finished in the top 25 to help them finish as the runner-up behind only first-place MSU-Mankato. The Oles were the top MIAC and Division III finisher in the 21-team field.
The Oles and Wintheiser hope to continue the great start to their fall season this weekend when they travel across the border into Wisconsin for an important meet. St. Olaf will compete Saturday at the Blugold Open hosted by UW-Eau Claire in Eau Claire, Wis. After that, the Oles have just two more races on the schedule to tune up for the 2012 MIAC Cross Country Championships, which will take place Saturday, Oct. 27, at Como Park Golf Course in St. Paul, Minn.
