Sartell, Minn. / Cathedral
St. Olaf's Grant Wintheiser (Sartell, Minn./Cathedral) continued his superb sophomore season over the weekend with a great performance on a big stage. Wintheiser was the top MIAC finisher at the University of Minnesota's Roy Griak Invitational Maroon Division III race Saturday, taking third place overall in an extremely talented field and leading St. Olaf to the top finish by a MIAC team in the process. For his performance, Wintheiser was named the MIAC Men's Cross Country Athlete-of-the-Week for the second time this season.
Wintheiser - who also won the MIAC weekly honor on Sept. 17 - was superb in his latest effort against extremely good competition. He finished the 8K course with a time of 25:46.5 and finished ahead of the entire field of 272 runners other than the top two. Wintheiser was just 14 seconds off the winning time, and finished more than 20 seconds ahead of the next MIAC finisher. His performance helped the Oles finish seventh in the 27-team field, just ahead of Bethel for the top conference finish.
St. Olaf and its star sophomore will take a week off to rest up before hitting the course again. The Oles are scheduled to run at the UW-La Crosse Jim Drews Invitational on Oct. 13 in La Crosse, Wis. That will be their final tune up before competing at the 2012 MIAC Cross Country Championships, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, at Como Park Golf Course in St. Paul, Minn.
