Oakdale, Minn. / North St. Paul
Though the 2013 men's cross country season just started last week, Bethel's Matt Berens (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) is already in midseason form. The Royals' junior was dominant in victory Saturday, winning the Augsburg College Quadrangular meet while leading his team to the win as well. Berens completed the course more than a minute faster than anyone else in the field. As a result, the Bethel star was named the first MIAC Men's Cross Country Athlete-of-the-Week of the 2013 season.
Berens started his 2013 in fine fashion, crossing the finish line in just 15:26, which was 62 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. He was the top finisher out of the 31-runner field. He led an impressive Royal team showing, as he has one of four Bethel runners in the top 10 and one of five in the top 11. The Royals used a team score of 38 to edge the host Auggies by just two points to take first in the four-team race.
Bethel and Berens will take this week off to prepare for their next competition, which will be Saturday, Sept. 14 in Iowa. The Royals will run at the Les Duke Invitational, hosted by Grinnell College at Oakland Acres Golf Course in Grinnell, Iowa. The meet is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
