Sauk Centre, Minn. / Sauk Centre

St. Thomas and sophomore runner Jacob Gerhartz (Sauk Centre, Minn.) started the season in style Friday at the annual Summit Cup. Both the Tommies and Gerhartz cruised to victory in dominant performances in the dual meet with MIAC rival Macalester to open the 2014 season in strong fashion. For his performance, Gerhartz was named the first MIAC Men's Cross Country Athlete-of-the-Week of the 2014 season.

Gerhartz finished the 6K course in 19:48 to finish first in a field of 41 competitors. He averaged 5:15 per mile en route to victory, and shaved nearly 40 seconds from his time in the same event a year ago. Gerhartz helped St. Thomas defeat the Scots 18-49, as he led a group of seven Tommies that finished in the top eight individuals.

The Tommies and their super sophomore Gerhartz will be back on the course Saturday for a nonconference dual race. St. Thomas will take on Crown Saturday at 11:15 a.m. in Waconia, Minn. The Tommies will hit the road following that dual for the National Catholic Championships in South Bend, Ind., on Sept. 19. St. Thomas is currently ranked No. 34 in NCAA Division III.
