Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska
Despite very difficult golfing conditions and an extremely competitive field, the Gustavus women's golf team and sophomore Sam Falk (Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska) carded good scores over the weekend at the Illinois Wesleyan University Spring Fling at Ironwood Golf Course in Normal, Ill. Falk broke 80 both days despite the bad weather to finish fourth individually, leading the Gusties to a fifth-place team finish in the process. For her performance, Falk was named the first MIAC Women's Golf Athlete-of-the-Week of the 2013 spring season.
Falk got off to a great start over the first 18 holes of the tournament, shooting a 5-over-par 77. She added a 7-over-par 79 on day two to finish with a total 36-hole score of 12-over-par 156 to earn her fourth-place finish. It was her second top-five finish of the season, and it helped Gustavus card a two-day total of 665 to finish in the top five of the team standings among a talented 18-team field that featured some of the best teams and golfers in all of Division III.
Gustavus has two meets left on its 2013 schedule as it tries to earn an at-large bid to the 2013 NCAA Division III Women's Golf National Tournament. Falk and the Gusties will host the Gustavus Triangular Friday and Saturday in Le Sueur and Mankato, Minn., and Gustavus will travel to Northfield on April 27-28 for the Carleton Invitational.
