Madison, Wis. / Edgewood
St. Thomas' Doyle O'Brien (Madison, Wis./Edgewood) appears to be peaking at the right time, as the Tommie turned in another great performance in her final tune up before the MIAC Championships. O'Brien was the top conference finisher in a talented field at the Gustavus Fall Invitational, earning her fourth-straight top-three finish with a tie for second place. As a result, O'Brien was named the MIAC Women's Golf Athlete-of-the-Week for the second week in a row.
O'Brien continued her stellar fall with a pair of impressive rounds in Le Sueur and Mankato, Minn., Saturday and Sunday to finish with a two-day total of 156 (11-over-par) and tie for runner-up honors as the top MIAC finisher. O'Brien started with a 79 on Saturday, then shaved two shots off her score to earn another top three finish. In the process, she helped St. Thomas finish third as a team - behind only Division II Minnesota State-Mankato and the host Gustavus team. This season, O'Brien's average of 78.8 shots per 18 holes is second only to reigning MIAC MVP Molly Erickson of St. Olaf (77.1) and she's been in the top 20 in all five appearances, with four-straight trips to the top three.
The Tommies hope their No. 1 player stays in top form with a big event on the schedule this weekend. The 2012 MIAC Golf Championships will be held Saturday, Sunday and Monday at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids, Minn. The first two rounds are scheduled to start at 11:20 a.m., with Monday's final round set to begin at 9 a.m. The winning team receives the conference title, as well as the MIAC's automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Division III Golf Championship.
