St. Aubin, Becker headline 2017 MIAC Women’s Soccer Awards

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – A pair of former Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Rookies of the Year have moved on to become the top Offensive and Defensive Players in the Conference, as Augsburg University forward Ashley St. Aubin and Gustavus Adolphus College goalkeeper Ashley Becker came away with top individual honors in the MIAC's annual women's soccer awards, released on Thursday.

A year after being named MIAC Rookie of the Year, St. Aubin (So. | F | Burnsville, Minn.) led the Conference with 26 points and 11 goals – five of which were game-winners – to become the third Auggie in the last four seasons to claim MIAC Offensive Player of the Year honors. St. Aubin scored at least one goal in 11 of Augsburg's 18 games in 2017, with the Auggies posting a record of 10-0-1 in those contests.

Becker (Jr. | GK | Farmington, Minn.) is now two years removed from becoming the MIAC's inaugural Rookie of the Year winner and the three-time All-Conference selection remains one of the toughest goalkeepers to fool in the MIAC. Becker put together a signature performance in the MIAC Playoffs, recording two huge saves on penalty kicks to propel the Gusties into the Conference title game. She tied for the MIAC lead with five shutouts on the year.

With both previous Rookie of the Year winners moving on to become Conference Players of the Year, the pressure is now on 2017 MIAC Rookie of the Year Megan Thompson (Fy. | F | Inver Grove Heights, Minn. | Academy of Holy Angels). The first-year forward was an instant sensation for Saint Benedict, scoring four goals in her very first collegiate game. Thompson finished the year with four assists in Conference play, the second-highest total among all MIAC competitors.

For the second time in MIAC history and first time since 1995, the Conference recognized a pair of head coaches with the MIAC Coach of the Year award. Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre (19th season) and St. Catherine head coach Jesse Campos (First season) were voted by their peers to receive the honor. Navarre led the Auggies to the program's second regular season Conference title in the last four years, while Campos guided St. Kate's to the Wildcats' first-ever MIAC Playoff Championship.

The MIAC also recognized All-Conference, Honorable Mention and All-Sportsmanship Teams. Becker and St. Thomas forward Mallory DeBoom headlined the All-Conference Team as three-time selections, while St. Aubin joined Brie Bourdage of St. Thomas, Arendje Louter of Hamline, Josie Mazzone of Gustavus, Maggie Sipe of Bethel and Clara Webby of Macalester as two-time honorees.

The 22-player All-Conference team included six seniors, nine juniors, six sophomores and one first-year player. Augsburg, St. Olaf and St. Thomas had three All-Conference selections each, while Gustavus, Hamline, Macalester and Saint Benedict all had a pair. Bethel, Carleton, Concordia, Saint Mary's and St. Catherine each had one All-Conference pick. An additional 22 players were recognized as Honorable Mention.

As part of a Conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the MIAC also announced the 12th-annual All-MIAC Sportsmanship team for women's soccer. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.
