Chris Evert Award winner Calleigh Carlson headlines 2017 MIAC Women's Tennis Awards

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced the 2017 MIAC Women's Tennis Awards Thursday, including the All-Conference teams, All-MIAC Sportsmanship team and top player and coach honors.

Gustavus senior Calleigh Carlson was named the winner of the MIAC Chris Evert Award, and Carleton Head Coach Luciano Battaglini was voted the winner of the Women's Tennis Coach-of-the-Year award by his peers.

Carlson's (St. Peter, Minn.) work on and off of the court made her very deserving of this award. The award annually recognizes a senior tennis student-athlete with outstanding sportsmanship and exemplary athletic, academic and humanitarian accomplishments. Carlson is a Religion and Communications double major, with great involvement in Pound Pals as a leader of program working at local animal shelter, in various religious organizations such as Proclaim and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), is the former Vice President of her sorority and is a Gustavus SAAC group member.

"The task of describe the last four years of moments on this campus, each one just as impactful as the last, seems next to impossible," said Carlson. "I am just grateful I got the opportunity to play collegiate tennis for the past four years. I am grateful for my teammates, coaches, and opponents. All have helped me in some way to be the competitor and, more importantly, the person I am today."

Carlson's accomplishments on the court also speak volumes as she has earned All-MIAC singles and doubles honors in her senior season. This year, Carlson was 16-6 in singles play and 16-8 in doubles play with a total of 93 career wins in both singles and doubles combined.

Battaglini has received his second MIAC Coach-of-the-Year honor in his 10th season with Carleton. He has lead the Knights to a 10-0 MIAC record and a 15-4 overall record in the 2016-2017 season. Living up to the pre-season poll expectations, Carleton has lead the MIAC this season and hopes to take home the fourth MIAC championship title under Battaglini's leadership.

The MIAC Women's Tennis All-Conference Singles and Doubles teams were determined using a point system for conference wins at each position, with the top 18 recognized for both singles and doubles including ties. In all, there were 19 players recognized on the singles all-conference team and 21 on the doubles all conference team in 2017.

As part of a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the MIAC announced the 11th annual All-MIAC Sportsmanship team for women's tennis. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.
