MIAC Athletes of the Week – Oct. 2, 2017

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners in football, volleyball, and soccer on Monday. Student-athletes from Augsburg, Concordia, Gustavus, Hamline, and Saint Benedict claimed the Conference's weekly honors for Sept. 25 – Oct. 1, 2017.

The winners of the latest Athlete of the Week awards are listed below, along with details on their award-winning performances. This week, Concordia had three student-athletes honored, while Augsburg, Gustavus, Hamline and Saint Benedict each had one.

The MIAC Athlete of the Week awards are nominated and selected each week by the Conference's sports information directors. Throughout the fall season, team sports (football, volleyball and soccer) will be recognized on Monday afternoons, with individual sports (cross country and golf) announced on Tuesday afternoons.

MIAC Football Offensive Player of the Week
Justice Spriggs
Hamline University
Jr. – Quarterback
St. Anthony, Minn. | St. Anthony Village

Junior quarterback Justice Spriggs passed for 287 yards and four touchdowns to go along with a career-high 81 yards on the ground in Hamline's 30-19 victory over Carleton on Saturday. Spriggs ranks second in the MIAC with a 163.9 efficiency mark this season.

MIAC Football Defensive Player of the Week
Alex Berg
Concordia College

Moorhead, Minn. | Fargo Shanley

Alex Berg led the Cobbers in tackles in Concordia's 27-17 victory over Gustavus on Saturday. Berg had a sack and quarterback hurry to help Concordia hold the MIAC's passing leader to just 183 yards through the air, marking the first time all season a team has held Gustavus to less than 290 passing yards in a game.

MIAC Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Tony Kostelecky
Concordia College

Jr. – Kicker
Dickinson, N.D.

Junior kicker Tony Kostelecky was perfect in windy conditions in Concordia's 27-17 victory over Gustavus. Kostelecky was 2-for-2 in field goal attempts and 3-for-3 in extra point tries. He has not missed a field goal or PAT since Week 2.

MIAC Volleyball Hitter of the Week
Taylor Linn
Augsburg University

Sr. – Middle Blocker
Shoreview, Minn. | Mounds View

Taylor Linn contributed 36 kills, 47 digs and 12 blocks for Augsburg last week, including registering her eighth kill-dig double-double of the year in a five-set loss to Minnesota-Morris on Monday. Linn also recorded her sixth .400-plus attack match of the season in a sweep of St. Catherine on Saturday.

MIAC Volleyball Setter/Libero of the Week
Megan Pekarek
College of Saint Benedict

Plymouth, Minn. | Osseo

Megan Pekarek recorded her 10th double-double of the season last week to help CSB finish 3-0 with three straight sweeps. She averaged 12.67 assists per set in a sweep of St. Scholastica, then recorded a double-double with 30 assists and 11 digs against Saint Mary's. She currently ranks third in the MIAC with 10.23 assists per set on the year.

MIAC Men's Soccer Athlete of the Week
Matt Murakami
Gustavus Adolphus College

Sr. – Midfielder
Eden Prairie, Minn.

Senior midfielder Matt Murakami led the Gusties in two 2-1 road victories at St. Olaf and Augsburg last week. He headed in his first goal of the season against St. Olaf and registered the third two-goal game of his career to guide the Gusties to victory over Augsburg.

MIAC Women's Soccer Athlete of the Week
Kalli Baarstad
Concordia College

So. – Midfielder
Fargo, N.D. | Fargo North

Kalli Baarstad played a role in both Concordia's game-winning overtime goals as the Cobbers went 2-0 last week. She assisted on the game-winner in double-overtime against Macalester on Wednesday and netted the ball herself against Carleton on Saturday. Baarstad leads Concordia in scoring this season with three goals and three assists on the year.
