Football debuts as NCAA releases latest fall regional rankings

Regional Rankings

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The NCAA released its latest regional rankings of the fall on Wednesday. Soccer and volleyball saw several order changes, while football was unveiled for the first time this year.

Regional rankings take into account win-loss percentage against NCAA Division III opponents, strength of schedule, head-to-head competition, results versus common and ranked opponents, and win-loss percentage over the last 25 percent of the season. "In-region competition" refers to games and matches played within a defined 500-mile radius, as well as all conference contests. Each regional committee ranks the top 15 percent of eligible teams in their respective region. Regional ranks come into play after conferences have determined their automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament, as all remaining teams are considered for at-large spots based on regional rankings.

Sixty-four teams are selected for NCAA Tournament play in men's soccer, women's soccer, and volleyball. The Men's Soccer Tournament will feature 42 conference champions, one independent squad, and 21 at-large selections. The Women's Soccer and Volleyball Tournaments will both feature 43 conference champions, one independent team, and 20 at-large picks. The NCAA Football Playoffs welcome just 32 teams, comprised of 27 conference champions and five at-large selections. MIAC soccer teams compete in the North Region, while MIAC volleyball squads are in the Central Region, and football teams play in the West Region.
