MIAC Athletes of the Week - March 27, 2023

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners for baseball, softball, and tennis Monday. Student-athletes from Gustavus, St. Olaf, and Saint John's claimed the Conference's weekly honors for March 20-26, 2023.

The MIAC Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by the Conference's sports information directors and selected by MIAC staff. Throughout the spring season, team sports (baseball, softball, and tennis) Athletes of the Week will be recognized on Monday afternoons, with individual sports (outdoor track & field and golf) announced on Tuesday afternoons. The winners of the latest Athlete of the Week awards are listed below, along with details on their outstanding performances.

MIAC Baseball Player of the Week
Joe Becker
Saint John's University

Jr. | Third Base
New Prague, Minn.

Joe Becker batted .500 (6-for-12) – including 4-for-6 (.667) with runners in scoring position – with five RBI, five runs scored, and two doubles as the Johnnies went 3-0 last week. Becker also earned three free trips to first base in addition to recording a pair of doubles - both against Crown on 3/25. He has reached base safely in all 17 games so far this spring.

MIAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Luke Siegle
Gustavus Adolphus College

Blaine, Minn. | Totino-Grace

Luke Siegle picked up the win on the mound for the Gusties in their home opener against Northwestern-St. Paul on 3/24, throwing six innings and allowing three hits. Siegle struck out four batters in the shutout victory while holding the Eagles to a team batting average of 0.158 during his six innings of work.


MIAC Softball Player of the Week
Caitlin Olafsson
Gustavus Adolphus College

Caitlin Olafsson led the Gusties at the plate during their trip to Florida last week, going 10-for-24 with seven RBI and six runs scored in eight games. Olafsson hit her first collegiate home run in the team's loss to Hope on 2/24 and had a pair of three-hit games against Washington & Jefferson (3/24) and Westminster (3/25).

MIAC Softball Pitcher of the Week
Madyn Singleton
St. Olaf College

Cedar Park, Texas

Madyn Singleton went 1-1 with a 1.31 ERA in four appearances for the Oles last week in Florida. Singleton earned the first victory of her collegiate career with 3.2 innings of shutout relief in a 5-3 win over Grinnell on 3/23 before allowing just one earned run in six innings against UW-Stevens Point the next day. She closed out the week by limiting UW-Whitewater to two runs over six innings in a no-decision on 3/25.


MIAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week
Jack Bergmeyer
Gustavus Adolphus College

Lincoln, Neb. | Southeast

Jack Bergmeyer helped the Gusties to a perfect MIAC weekend, defeating Macalester, 8-1, and Saint John's, 9-0. Bergmeyer was 2-0 in the No. 1 singles spot in both matches and picked up two doubles wins over the Scots and the Johnnies to help the Gusties improve to 6-0 in conference play.

MIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week
Olha Zubarieva
St. Olaf

Kyiv, Ukraine | Research School Basis

Olha Zubarieva won 3-of-4 for the Oles in matches against George Fox and nationally-ranked NCAA Division II Embry-Riddle last week. Zubarieva and Allie Prokosch extended their winning streak at No. 1 doubles to eight matches with two wins, including a 6-2 victory against No. 31-ranked Embry Riddle on 3/25. Zubarieva also won both of her matches in a 5-4 win over George Fox on 3/24, dropping just three games at No. 1 singles.
