MIAC announces 2023 Women's Outdoor Track & Field awards

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) put the finishing touches on another record-breaking Outdoor Track & Field Championship meet with the announcement of its annual Women's Outdoor Track & Field awards on Thursday.

The top three finishers in each event received All-MIAC honors, while individuals that finished 4-6 received All-Conference Honorable Mention distinction. MIAC track & field coaches also selected individual award recipients for Track Athlete of the Year, Field Athlete of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Coach of the Year.

Gustavus senior Birgen Nelson was selected as the Track Athlete of the Year, while Macalester senior Journey Amundson received Field Athlete of the Year honors. Bethel first-year Nora Wilhelm was selected Rookie of the Year and Gustavus head coach Aaron Lund was recognized as MIAC Coach of the Year for Women's Outdoor Track & Field.

Nelson (Sr. | Edina, Minn.) earned her second straight Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year honor after collecting four first-place finishes for the Gusties at the 2023 MIAC Outdoor Championships. Nelson clocked the second-fastest all-conditions time in NCAA Division III history to win the 100-meter hurdles in 13.37. Nelson's time of 11.71 in the 100-meter dash is the fourth fastest in NCAA Division III this season, while her 400-hurdles mark is a new program record and ranks second-fastest in the nation this spring. Nelson also ran on the Gusties' 4×100-meter relay team that broke the facility, program, and conference record with a time of 47.15. Nelson is the first athlete to repeat as MIAC Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year since Nikki Arola of St. Thomas did so in 2008 and 2009.

Amundson (Sr. | Iron River, Wis. | Northwestern) was named Field Athlete of the Year after winning both the triple and long jumps at the 2023 MIAC Outdoor Championships. Amundson's PR in the long jump set a new program record of 5.54 meters (18' 2.25"), besting the previous mark set in 1988. She also locked down the triple jump with a distance of 11.92 meters (39' 1.25"), setting a new facility record in the process. Amundson is Macalester's first athlete on-record to receive MIAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year honors. She is the first Scot to receive individual outdoor honors since Phoebe Aguiar earned Outstanding Performance of the Meet accolades in 2019.

Wilhelm (Fy. | Maplewood, Minn. | Concordia Academy) received Rookie of the Year honors after winning the discus and placing fourth in the shot put at the 2023 MIAC Outdoor Championships. Wilhelm threw a personal best distance of 41.37 meters (135' 8") to capture the event title in the discus, a mark that ranks third-best in program history. She also logged a mark of 12.45 meters (40' 10.25") to earn honorable mention distinction in the shot put. Wilhelm is the inaugural MIAC Rookie of the Year recipient for women's outdoor track & field.

Lund (fourth season) was named MIAC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season after guiding the Gusties to a repeat outdoor track & field championship. In Lund's fourth season at the helm, Gustavus came away with eleven All-Conference spots and six MIAC titles. Lund is the first repeat recipient of the MIAC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year award since St. Thomas' Joe Sweeney won two in a row in 2013 and 2014.

In addition to the top individual award winners, the 2023 All-Conference individuals and relay teams were also announced. Complete results and recaps of the 2023 MIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships can be found on the event homepage.
