BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - Spring weather has rescheduled a number of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) baseball games this week, with teams aiming to get back on the diamond by Thursday.
NATIONAL NOTABLES
St. Olaf senior RHP Sam Lavin (Algonquin, Ill. | Marian Central Catholic) was named to D3baseball.com's Team of the Week for his play from 4/8/14.
Bethel senior OF Matthew Carlsen (Miltona, Minn. | Alexandria) had six hits against Johns Hopkins on 3/16, tied for the second-most in any NCAA Division III game this season.
Carleton sophomore 1B Will Schnepf (Dallas, Texas | Parish Episcopal) has an at-bats-to-strikeouts ratio of 59:1 this season, third-best in NCAA Division III.
Saint John's junior RHP Connor Hartley (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. | Rosemount) has a strikeouts-to-walks ratio of 31:3 this season, sixth-best in Division III. His walks-per-nine-innings average of 0.71 ranks fourth in the country.
Saint John's junior C Blake Mellgren (Northfield, Minn.) had 19 putouts against UW-Superior on 2/26, tied for the fifth-most in any D-III game this season. His 21 total chances in the game are tied for the second-most in any Division III game this year.
Saint John's senior 3B Joe Becker (New Prague, Minn.) had nine RBI against Carleton on 4/13, tied for the third-most in any D-III game this season.
St. Olaf junior 2B Matthew Kulesa (Minneapolis, Minn. | DeLaSalle) ranks first in Division III with an at-bats-to-strikeouts ratio of 75:1 this season.
AROUND THE MIAC
Augsburg junior C Adam Marshall (Rochester, Minn. | Mayo) batted .429 (6-for-14) in four games for the Auggies last week. Marshall drew two walks to reach base safely eight times, hitting three doubles and batting in four runs while scoring one run himself. Marshall has a hit in seven of his last eight games, with his season average now sitting at .408.
Bethel graduate RHP John Solfest (Shoreview, Minn. | Mounds View) tossed a complete-game shutout to give the Royals a 7-0 win in game two at Gustavus on 4/9. Solfest struck out seven, walked two, and scattered three hits across nine innings of work. He has now tossed 18 combined scoreless innings in his last two starts, which included a nine-inning, no-hit no-decision against Saint John's on 4/3.
Carleton sophomore 3B Ryan Chang (Alameda, Calif. | The College Preparatory School) batted .500 with two home runs and five RBI in matchups with Saint Mary's (4/5), Bethel (4/6), and UW-Eau Claire (4/10). He went 5-for-7 with a pair of homers at Bethel on 4/6 as the Knights swept the Royals for the first time since 2013. He went 4-for-4 in game one against the Royals, including a grand slam to bust the game open. It was the first grand slam by the Knights since 2017. He is the first Knight with a two-homer day since 2016.
Concordia junior 1B Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe (Moorhead, Minn.) went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored in the Cobbers' game-two loss to Bethel on 4/13. He has multiple hits in six of his last eight games.
Gustavus senior 2B Drake Siens (Rogers, Minn. | St. Michael-Albertville) had a home run in both games of a doubleheader split with St. Scholastica on 4/13. Siens has three homers in his last four games.
Hamline senior 1B Tyler Johnson (Poplar, Wis. | Duluth Marshall) finished last week 6-for-12 with four RBI, four runs scored, and a home run. He is on a six-game hit streak with multiple hits in five of those contests.
Macalester junior C Bowman Wingard (Palo Alto, Calif.) went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in the Scots' win over Carleton on 4/15. Wingard had an RBI and a double against Augsburg on 4/13.
Saint John's junior C Blake Mellgren (Northfield, Minn.) led the Johnnies with a .563 batting average (9-for-16) and .650 on-base percentage in five games last week. Mellgren batted .727 (8-for-11) with runners on base, including 5-for-7 (.714) with runners in scoring position, and recorded a double, seven runs scored and five RBI. Mellgren caught 36 of the 37 innings last week behind the plate.
Saint Mary's senior 2B Tanner Bauman (Willmar, Minn.) hit .500 (6-for-12) in four games for the Cardinals last week. Bauman had two doubles and a triple while scoring five runs, driving in a pair, and boasting an .833 slugging percentage, leading SMU to three wins.
St. Olaf senior 1B Joey Glampe (Northfield, Minn.) hit .647 (11-for-17) with a 1.059 slugging percentage in the Oles' 4-1 week, recording a double, two home runs, eight runs scored, and 10 RBI in five games. The senior hit a tie-breaking two-run home run in the sixth inning of 10-5 win in game two of the team's sweep of St. Scholastica on 4/9 before going 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, a home run, three runs scored, and seven RBI in an 18-4 win over Crown the next day. Glampe closed out the week by going 6-for-8 with three runs scored in a split at Saint Mary's on 4/13, including a four-hit, three-run game in a 7-4 game-two victory.
St. Scholastica graduate OF Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn.) went 6-for-16 with a .375 average in four conference contests last week against St. Olaf (4/9) and Gustavus (4/13). Schelonka had four RBI and two runs scored, a double, and a stolen base. In a series split with the Gusties, Schelonka went 4-for-8 and drove in three runs.
