MIAC announces 2024 Women's Outdoor Track & Field awards

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its annual award recipients for Women's Outdoor Track & Field on Thursday, capping off an outstanding championship meet last weekend.

The top three finishers in each event received All-MIAC honors, while individuals that finished 4-6 received All-Conference Honorable Mention distinction. MIAC track & field coaches also selected individual award recipients for Track Athlete of the Year, Field Athlete of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Coach of the Year.

Saint Benedict senior Fiona Smith was selected as the Track Athlete of the Year while Gustavus junior Kelley Brennan received Field Athlete of the Year honors. Saint Benedict first-year Sabriya Farquharson picked up Rookie of the Year honors, and Bethel head coach Andrew Rock was selected as the MIAC Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year.

Smith (Sr. | Dhahran, Saudi Arabia) received Track Athlete of the Year honors after winning a trio of MIAC titles at the 2024 Outdoor Championships. Smith claimed titles in the 1,500-meter run (4:28.55), 5,000-meter run (16:51.63), and 10,000-meter run (34:15.01). She now holds meet records in all three events. Smith is the first CSB athlete to receive Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year honors. She had previously won each of the last three MIAC Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Year awards.

Brennan (Jr. | Shakopee, Minn.) earned Field Athlete of the Year honors after earning All-Conference distinction in three throwing events at the 2024 conference championships. Brennan placed second in both the discus (43.30m) and hammer throw (49.58m) in addition to a third-place finish in the shot put (12.45m). She is the seventh different Gustie to be named MIAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year since 1997 and the third in the last six seasons.

Farquharson (Fy. | Nassau, Bahamas | Saint Augustine’s College) received Rookie of the Year distinction after taking home the conference crown in the long jump with a leap of 5.61 meters. She also placed sixth in the triple jump (10.78m). Farquharson is the first Bennie in program history to receive Outdoor Track & Field Rookie of the Year honors.

Rock (12th season) was celebrated by his peers as both the Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year after leading the Royals to conference championships for the first time in both men’s and women’s program history. He is the first coach since at least 1997 to be named MIAC Coach of the Year for both men’s and women’s outdoor track & field. Rock also swept the Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year honors.
