MIAC Athletes of the Week - January 6, 2025

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners for basketball and hockey on Monday. Student-athletes from Bethel, Gustavus, St. Catherine, Saint John's, Saint Mary's, and St. Scholastica claimed the Conference's weekly honors.

The MIAC Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by the Conference's sports information directors and selected by MIAC staff. Throughout the winter season, team sports (basketball and hockey) Athletes of the Week will be recognized on Monday afternoons, with individual sports (swimming & diving and indoor track & field) announced on Tuesday afternoons. The winners of the latest Athlete of the Week awards are listed below, along with details on their outstanding performances.

MIAC Men's Basketball Offensive Player of the Week
Blake Berg
Saint John's University

Blake Berg shot 64.9 percent (24-for-37) from the field, including a 5-for-8 showing (.625) from three-point range, and averaged 19.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 29.7 minutes per game as the nationally-ranked Johnnies went 3-0 over the holiday break. Saint John's defeated a pair of 2024 NCAA Tournament teams to win Catholic’s Tom McKavitt Classic 12/18-19 in Washington, D.C. Berg led all scorers with 17 points and added three assists in 26 minutes of play in a 71-55 win over Marymount (Va.) on 12/18 and followed that with 19 points and three assists in a 91-66 victory over Rowan (N.J.) on 12/19. He led all scorers with 22 points and chipped in three rebounds, two assists and two steals in SJU’s 79-61 win over Hamline on 1/4.

Jabari Sawyer
Saint Mary's University

Jabari Sawyer set a career-high with seven steals in the Cardinals' 77-67 victory at Caltech on 12/31. He added a steal and four rebounds against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps a day earlier and wrapped up the holiday break with four more boards against Concordia on 1/4.


MIAC Women's Basketball Offensive Player of the Week
Maddie Young
St. Catherine University

Cloquet, Minn.

Maddie Young closed out 2024 with back-to-back 20-point performances in Wildcat wins over Buena Vista (12/30) and Minnesota-Morris (12/31). Young set a career-high with 23 points at BVU while shooting 10-for-13 from the floor and followed that up with 22 points against the Cougars the next day, converting on nine of her 13 field goals. She chipped in five points against nationally-ranked Gustavus on 1/4.

MIAC Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week
Kali Olson
Saint Mary's University

Kali Olson enjoyed a career-best performance with an 18-point, 18-rebound double-double in the Cardinals' 63-58 road victory at Concordia on 1/4. Olson added four blocks and a steal in the win. Her 18 boards are the most by any MIAC women's basketball player in a game this year. She also had nine rebounds, two blocks, and a steal in a loss to nationally-ranked Hardin-Simmons on 12/28.


MIAC Men's Hockey Offensive Player of the Week
Evan Pahos
The College of St. Scholastica

Evan Pahos scored two goals and assisted on two more in the Saints' 8-0 rout of Northland on 1/3. Pahos scored the first two goals of the game - one on a power play - and assisted on two third-period goals. Pahos also won seven of his 12 faceoffs and tallied one block in the win.

Colin Androlewicz recorded his first career collegiate victory in a 6-2 win at Dubuque on 1/2. Androlewicz made a career-high 29 saves in the first game and then responded with another win the following day to complete the sweep. Androlewicz made 40 saves in the series with a 2.00 goals against average and a .909 save percentage.


MIAC Women's Hockey Offensive Player of the Week

Ana Myers tallied the second hat trick of her career to help the Wildcats to a 5-5 tie against Johnson & Wales on 1/3. Myers scored goals in all three periods - a short-handed goal in the first to cut JWU's lead to 2-1, an even-strength goal in the second to knot it up at 3-3, and a power-play goal in the third to even the game at 4-4. She found the back of the net one more time to give the Wildcats the edge in the shootout. Myers scored one more goal in the second game of the series on 1/4, scoring less than 30 seconds into the contest.

MIAC Women's Hockey Defensive Player of the Week
Ashley Gustafson
Bethel University

Ashley Gustafson collected 20 saves and allowed one goal in the Royals' 4-1 win over Trine on 1/4 to complete the series sweep. The lone goal allowed by Bethel came with the Thunder on the power play against an empty net. Nine of Gustafson's 20 saves came in the third period with seven of those coming in the final six minutes of the game.
