Pat Lamb
A pioneering champion for women in athletics, Pat Lamb was an influential leader in the early development of increased sports opportunities for women, not only at Carleton, but also at the state, regional, and national levels. Lamb came to Carleton in 1962 and stayed there until retiring from teaching in 1994. She was the first director of women's athletics at the institution, serving in that role from 1972-85. She supervised the development of 12 varsity athletic programs, coaching many of them herself, though her specialty was tennis. Lamb was influential in the process of advancing women’s athletics and assisted in providing gender equity at Carleton.

Ele Hansen
Ele Hansen chaired the Women’s Physical Education Department, taught PE classes, and coached women’s softball and cross-country for 34 years, until her retirement in 1986. Hansen advocated for women’s physical education and other issues, springing Carleton ahead of its time in providing a wide range of PE classes and resources. Hansen was a role model for generations of Carleton women students who were encouraged by her to be and become themselves. “The Women’s Gym” (Cowling Recreation Center) was built in 1965 through Ele’s strong encouragement and became a center of the feminist movement on campus.
