Four to be inducted into Saint Mary's Hall of Fame

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University Cardinal 'M' Club, in association with the Alumni Office, will induct four members into the SMU Sports Hall of Fame during Cardinal 'M' Club Weekend Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 14-15.

The Hall of Fame Class of 2007 — Vicki (Wilson '96) Greene (basketball, volleyball), Kevin Henthorne '93 (baseball), Mike Horvath '82 (basketball), and Julie (Giebe '97) Houchin (soccer) — will be honored during a ceremony Saturday evening.

Along with the induction of this year's Hall of Fame class, Saturday's ceremony also includes honoring SMU's 2006-2007 award-winners, as well as last year's Outstanding Male and Female Athletes, and Outstanding Scholar Athletes.

The weekend festivities conclude on Sunday with various alumni games held on the SMU campus.

Vicki (Wilson '96) Greene: A dual-sport athlete during her career at Saint Mary’s, Wilson was a two-time all-conference selection in basketball and an all-MIAC pick in 1993 in volleyball. On the basketball court, Wilson lod the MIAC in scoring and rebounding during the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons, while closing out her career No. 1 in blocked shots (178)  and among the top 10 in field goals made (500), free throws made (256), rebounds (699), points scored (1,256), scoring average (14.1  ppg) and rebound average (7.9 rpg). On the volleyball court, Wilson is currently ranked No. 1 all-time in kills-per-game (4.31), attach percentage (.734), total blocks (428), block assists (331) and points-per-game (5.75). She is also second in blocks-per-game (1.84), third in solo blocks (97) and ninth in kills (1,005) and total points (1,340.5).

Kevin Henthorne ‘93: A three-year letterwinner and the Cardinals’ starting pitcher and shortstop, Henthorne was a two-time All-MIAC selection and was named to the NCAA Division III All-Midwest Region Second Team following his junior and senior seasons. The 1992 recipient of the Max Molock Award as the team’s most valuable player, Henthorne boasted a career batting average . including a .410 average during his junior campaign, and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 90-18. Upon graduation, Henthorne  has continued his playing career, spending the past 14 seasons playing baseball professionally. Henthorne signed his first professional contract in 1994 with Independent San-Antonio and was later signed by the New York Yankees in 1995. A veteran of 12 professional minor league seasons, his career also included stints within both the Arizona Diamondbacks and Tampa Bay Devil Rays systems and international experience in China, Mexico, and Venezuela. His professional career ended in 2005 after posting a 121-52 record with 12 saves, a 3.21 ERA and 955 strikeouts. Numerous awards and honors include -  all-star teams in: Texas-Louisiana League (1995), Chinese Professional League (1999), Venezuela Winter League (2004, 2005); Mexican League Championships (2000, 2001), a member of the 2002 Pan American Team, Reliever of the Year, Venezuela Winter League (2004), Atlantic League Pitcher of the Year (2004), ERA Champion China Profession League (1998) and Atlantic League (2004).

Mike Horvath ’82: A three-time All-MIAC selection and a two-time team captain, Horvath is a member of the men’s basketball team’s 1,000-point club, scoring 1,066 points during his career. Named Saint Mary’s Outstanding Male Athlete in 1982, Horvath was an All-District 13 selection in 1982, as well as an NAIA Honorable-Mention All-American. Horvath closed out his career witih 437 rebounds (4.6  rpg), was fifth all-time in field goal percentage  (.488) and was a member of the Division III Midwest All-Star team, which played in Austria against European professional and national teams.

Julie (Giebe '97) Houchin: Giebe was a four-time All-MIAC and three-time All-West Region selection in women’s soccer and closed out her storied career as one of the best women’s soccer players in Saint Mary’s history. A first-team All-Ameircan in 1995, Giebe is the school’s all-time career leader in goals (66), shots  (408) and shots-per-game (5.83), and is second all-time in goals-per-game (0.94) and points-per-game (2.13). She also ranked third in points (149) and is 11th in career assists (17).
