During the 2007-2008 academic year the Minnesota
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) will celebrate its
25thanniversary of women’s athletics. During the
year, the Conference will commemorate this important milestone in
women’s athletics with events taking place on each campus.
Additionally, the MIAC website will contain information about past
MIAC and NCAA National Champions, a timeline of major events, as
well as feature stories on individuals who have made the past 25
years a success and have set the stage for the next chapter of the
story on women’s athletics.
Over the past 25 years, the MIAC has taken great pride in the
advancement of women’s athletics. The MIAC currently sponsors
women’s championships in 11 different sports. The Conference
boasts 11 NCAA women’s National Team Championships as well as
85 individual student-athletes who have been crowned NCAA
Champions. In 1998, the MIAC became one of the first conferences in
the nation to adopt women’s hockey as a varsity
intercollegiate sport.
“This truly marks a great achievement for women’s
sports. It is very important to remember how far women’s
athletics have come over the past 25 years so as to continue
advancing opportunities for women in intercollegiate
athletics,” said MIAC Assistant Director, Kelly Anderson
Diercks.
