NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Cindy Book, Chris Daymont and Tammy
Metcalf-Filzen were honored by St. Olaf on Wednesday at halftime of
the men's basketball game against Carleton for their contribution
to women's sport as a part of the MIAC's 25 Years of Women's
Athletics celebration.
Book
Book has been at the helm of the St. Olaf volleyball team for
15 seasons. Book ranks as the seventh winningest coach in terms of
total wins (599) and is also in the top 30 in winning percentage
(.677) in NCAA Division III history.
Under Book, the Oles have been one of the most prolific
volleyball programs in the Midwest, capturing five MIAC regular
season titles and seven NCAA Tournament berths. St. Olaf was third
in the MIAC in Book's first campaign in 1991 and the Oles finished
first or second for the next ten of 11 seasons.
In her tenure, St. Olaf reached the NCAA Elite Eight three
consecutive times from 1995-97 and the '96 team was a semifinalist,
capturing third place, the highest in school
history.
She began her career at Keene State, where she was head coach
for two seasons before spending eight seasons at Bethel. Book
eclipsed the 500 career win plateau on Sept. 1,
2000.
Daymont
Chris Daymont has been part of women's athletics at St. Olaf
for 27 years. Daymont has mentored over 1,000 student-athletes
during her tenure at St. Olaf, coaching over 30 different athletes
who have earned nearly 80 All-America titles.
In cross country, Daymont has led St. Olaf to eight
conference championships in her tenure, the second-most of any MIAC
school. The Oles captured five straight from 1998-2002, and had
their best NCAA finish in that stretch, a fourth-place finish in
1999. In all, Daymont's cross country teams have qualified for 16
NCAA Championships, the eighth-most in Division III. She also led
three teams to the AIAW Championships from
1979-1981.
In track and field, Daymont has earned NCAA III Central
Region Coach of the Year three times, most recently in 1995. During
the fall of 2002, Daymont was named Minnesota Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (MIAC) Coach of the Year for a second
time.
Daymont maintains her best honor has been the opportunity to
coach her children - Sara Daymont Schwartz '01, an All-MIAC
honoree, and Megan Daymont Thomas '03, a six-time All-America track
and cross country runner.
Metcalf-Filzen
Tammy Metcalf-Filzen, a 1983 graduate and Athletics Hall of
Famer at St. Olaf, is in her 11th season as head women's basketball
coach at Carleton.
As a student-athlete at St. Olaf Metcalf-Filzen was a
four-time letterwinner and two-time All-MIAC honoree in basketball.
In 1982- 83, she led the country in free throw
percentage.
She was inducted to the St. Olaf Hall of Fame in
1999.
She spent two seasons as the head coach at St. Olaf before
becoming an assistant at Division I Temple and the University of
Minnesota.
Since landing the job at Carleton in 1992, she has become
winningest women's basketball coach in school history (206-86,
.705).
Metcalf-Filzen has been named the MIAC's Coach of the Year
and the Region Coach of the Year three times. Her teams have
averaged 20 wins or more over the past six seasons, gained three
regular season titles and collected four straight MIAC Tournament
Championships from 2001-2004. She reached the 200-win plateau for
her career last season.
