This award is named in memory of the late Mike Augustin, a longtime sportswriter at the Pioneer Press. Mike was an articulate friend, follower and advocate of the MIAC. He respected Division III institutions, student-athletes, and coaches. He died after a sudden illness in December of 1997.

The Mike Augustin Award will be presented annually, beginning in 1999, to recognize outstanding contributions to MIAC athletic programs and their student-athletes. MIAC Sports Information Directors choose recipients of the award.
