| Augsburg vs. Hamline | Football | Founded: 2005 |
The 2015-16 season marks the 11th meeting for The Hammer, with Augsburg leading 8-2 in games for the trophy. In 2005, Augsburg head coach Frank Haege was trying to come up with ideas for generating some fun with the series between Augsburg and Hamline, and playing for a trophy came to mind. But what trophy to use? Haege, in his first year as Augsburg's head coach, found it in a trophy used by the coaching staff last season and awarded to the special teams player of the week. And the trophy, a hammer, has a tie-in to both Augsburg and Hamline -- Greg Flickinger served as special teams coach at Augsburg in 2004, and moved to Hamline in 2005 to serve in the same capacity. The trophy has a maroon handle and gray head, similar to the school colors of both schools -- maroon and gray for Augsburg, burgundy and gray for Hamline. It will be guarded during the game by the athletic trainer of the winning school from the previous year.
