| Hamline vs. Macalester | Football | Founded: 1965 |
The Paint Bucket is a symbol of victory in a rivalry between Hamline and Macalester that dates back to the 1800s. The Paint Bucket was created 50 years ago by Hamline alumnus Chuck Slocum ’69. In a September 2014 interview with the Pioneer Press Slocum explained, “… at the time, one of the running pranks was players from Hamline and Macalester would spray paint on the other's campus … It was destructive. So I talked to some of the guys at Macalester, and we decided to do something constructive with it." The 2015 game - won by Hamline 27-10 on Sept. 12 - marked the 50th anniversary of the Paint Bucket’s historical origin in 1965.
