COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- It turns out the record-setting
performance Thursday in the pentathlon would be a sign of things to
come at the 2014 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
(MIAC) Women's Track and Field Championships. The meet continued
Friday with its first full day of competition and three more meet
records fell, while the St. Thomas women took a step towards their
15th-straight championships.
The Tommies got a pair of meet records from star sprinter
Mallory Burnham, and racked up 98 points to take a 24-point lead
after the first full day of competition. Saint Benedict - which is
co-hosting the meet in Collegeville, Minn., with Saint John's -
scored 74 points to slot in second, and the Blazers set the other
meet record Friday. Carleton is also in the title hunt, as the
Knights sit just five points behind CSB in third with 69
points.
St. Olaf is currently in fourth with 48 points, and Hamline has
37 to round out the top five. Bethel is sixth with 28 and Augsburg
has an even 20 in seventh. The next three spots were separated by
just three points with Macalester (16), Gustavus (15) and St.
Catherine (13) in places No. 8-10 after one day. Concordia has nine
points and Saint Mary's has two to round out the standings midway
through the meet.

Each of Burnham's races became must-see events Friday, as she
eclipsed the previous meet record in all four total heats of the
60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles. In both races, she set a new
meet record in the prelims, then finished first in the finals with
times that were just 0.01 seconds off her prelim times. She
finished the 60-hurdle prelim in 8.66 seconds, then won with 8.67
in the finals. In the 60, her record-setting prelim time was 7.62,
then was victorious in the finals in 7.63.
In its hunt for its 15th-straight MIAC Women's Indoor
championship, St. Thomas received a boost from several other
top-three finishes Friday. Gabrielle Pepin was the runner-up in the
5,000-meter run and UST also took second in the DMR. Bailey Cook
was third in both the long jump and high jump, Angela Tipp took
third in the 400, Megan Terukina took third in the mile and Haley
Zajac was third in the weight throw.
The evening's other meet record was delivered courtesy of the
host school, as Saint Benedict first-year runner Allison Kosobud
won the 800-meter run in a record time of 2:13.50. St. Thomas'
Emily Gapinski finished second and Bethel's Rebecca Wesley came in
third behind the Blazer's new meet record. Saint Benedict added a
win in the final event of the night - the distance medley relay
(DMR) - with Kelsie Larson, Maria
Kiminski, Kayti Helm and Sam Womeldorf winning the race in
12:38.68.
Carleton's Amelia Campbell continued her tremendous MIAC
Championships performance. A day after breaking the Division III
pentathlon record, the Knights' sophomore won the long jump with a
distance of 18-3, and was the runner-up to Burnham in the
60-hurdles with a time of 8.89. She also added a top-five finish in
the high jump Friday night.
In addition to Campbell's continued success, the Carleton women
had several highlights Friday, starting with a 1-2 finish in the
mile. Colette Celichowksi won the race in 5:06.36, and teammate
Ruth Steinke was right behind her in second at 5:09.02. The Knights
also took third in the DMR and Ellie Wilson ran to a second-place
finish in the 400-meter dash.
St. Olaf had a pair of teammate take the top two spots in the
high jump. Dani Larson and Elise Raney both cleared the bar at 5-5,
but Larson took fewer attempts, so she claimed the top spot, and
Raney was the runner-up. Another Ole - Jorden Johnson - added a
third-place finish in the 5K. Hamline also had teammates finish 1-2
in a field event, as the Pipers got a win from Jessica Putland in
the weight throw with a distance of 53-11.25, and teammate Erin
Urbanoiwicz was the runner-up, and Hamline's Maroly Saulsberry
added a third-place finish in the 60-hurdles.

The Bethel women also had a solid night, led by Courtney
Fregeau's victory in the 400. Fregeau scored her first-place finish
with a time of 57.87 seconds. Teammate Ashley Magelssen added a
third-place finish in the 60 to match Wesley's finish in the
800.
Several other schools were delighted with All-Conference
performances Friday, starting with Augsburg's Lauren Rice running
to victory in the 5K. Rice completed the course in 17:19.92 and
pulled away to win by nearly 40 seconds. St. Catherine got a
second-place finish from rookie sprinter Shakeela Wells-Johnson in
the 60, and Concordia's Hillary Thompson was the runner-up in the
long jump.
Saturday's final event begins at 4:10 p.m., and there will be a
short awards ceremony following the conclusion of the meet to honor
both team champions. The top three individuals in each event and
the first-place relay team will automatically earn All-Conference
honors, and the 4th-through-6th place finishers in each open event
and 2nd-through-6th place relay teams will all be named
All-Conference Honorable Mention.
