St. Thomas makes it 30 MIAC Indoor T&F titles in a row

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - Most people will think of the ESPN documentary series when they hear "30-for-30," but now that moniker will also apply to the University of St. Thomas men's track and field team, as the Tommies won their 30th-consecutive Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Men's Indoor Track and Field championship Saturday at Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minn.

St. Thomas submitted another impressive overall performance Saturday to put the finishing touches on three decades of dominance, as UST has claimed the MIAC title at each of the 30 Indoor Track and Field Championships in conference history. The Tommies finished with a total of 186 points, and won by 60 points over the rest of the field. St. Olaf continued an impressive performance in the distance events with another meet record and a runner-up finish with 126 points. Hamline also reached triple digits on the scoreboard, joining the top three with a total of 115.5.

The host school - Saint John's - finished fourth with 79 points, and Bethel rounded out the top five with 69.5 points. Gustavus wasn't far behind the Royals in sixth with a total of 63.5 points. Carleton took seventh with 48.5 points and Concordia (35.5) edged Augsburg (32) for eighth. The Tommies had another well-rounded performance en route to its 30th-straight title, starting with dominance in the shot put. Bryan Thell won the event for the second year in a row with a throw of 49-6.5, and Aba Omot was the runner up again as well with a good throw of 49-5. UST swept the top four spots in the event with Matt Schauer and Micah Hausman finishing third and fourth, respectively.

St. Thomas also won the 4x200-meter relay, as Cole Boughner, Tremayne Williams, Ryan Queenan and Brian Jarvey finished first with a time of 1:29.46. Jarvey added a victory in the 200-meter dash with a winning time of 22.44 a day after he won the MIAC title in the 400. The Tommies also finished second in the 4x400-meter relay, and Nick Harrison was third in the 600-meter run.

The top individual highlight of the day came courtesy of St. Olaf distance star Grant Wintheiser, as the two-time MIAC cross country champ broke a meet record for the second day in a row. Friday, Wintheiser set a new record in the mile, and Saturday he finished the 3,000-meter run in first with a new record of 8:28.10. Teammate Jake Campbell finished third in the 3K as well, and the Oles Paul Escher was second in the 1K to continue the team's distance success. St. Olaf also won the 4x400-meter relay, as James McFarlin, J.B. Tut, Kevin Skrip and Aaron Stets crossed the finish line in 3:21.78.

Hamline had another great day to finish in the top three, with a pair of individual winners and several other All-Conference (top-three) performances. Amani Lee traveled a distance of 45-10.75 to win the triple jump, with teammate Mark Latzke coming in second. Piper runner Will Warmka ran to victory in the 600 with a time of 1:22.22, and Hamline was third in both of Saturday's relay races.

The host team had plenty to cheer about as well, as the Johnnies had several standout performances Saturday. Nick Welshons cleared the bar at 6-10.25 to win the high jump. The Johnnies also finished second in the 4x200, Yasin Williams was second in the 200, and Thomas Feichtinger was third in an entertaining race, the 1,000-meter run.

In fact, the 1K was one of the best races in recent memory, as the third decimal place was needed to determine a winner. Bethel's Zach Haskins won his second-straight championship in the event with a winning time of 2:29.693, with St. Olaf's Escher as close as one can get in second at 2:29.694. Bethel also got a second-place finish from Mark Rice in the 600.

Other individual highlights Saturday included a pair of All-Conference honors for Concordia athletes, as Ben Vickstrom finished third in the 200 and Mark Goss was also third in the high jump. Macalester's Logan Hovie nearly defended his title in the high jump, as he finished second behind Welshons. Carleton's Jonah Barry was second in the 3K, and Gustavus' Blair Riegel jumped his way to third in the high jump.

There was a short awards ceremony following the conclusion of the meet to honor both team champions. The top three individuals in each event and the first-place relay team automatically earn All-Conference honors, and the 4th-through-6th place finishers in each open event and 2nd-through-6th place relay teams will all be named All-Conference Honorable Mention.
