Tommie women win 15th-straight MIAC Indoor championship

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- The University of St. Thomas put the finishing touches on its 15th-straight conference title Saturday at the 2014 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Championships at Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minn. The Tommies pulled away to continue a decade and a half of dominance, and two more meet records fell to highlight Saturday's final day.

St. Thomas completed its title with two first-place finishes and a host of other All-Conference (top-three) performances Saturday to run its winning point total up to 185. Saint Benedict - which co-hosted with the Johnnies - was the runner-up with 122 points and Carleton came in third as the only other team to reach triple digits with 110 points.

St. Olaf scored 72 to finish fourth, edging out Hamline just four points, as the Pipers also joined the top five with a total of 68 points. Bethel scored 57 to finish sixth, and the next three spots were separated by just two points. Gustavus was in seventh with 39, Augsburg had 38 and Macalester had 37. Concordia had a great day in the field and finished just three points behind the Scots at 34 to round out the top 10, and St. Catherine (16) and Saint Mary's (two) completed the final standings.

The Tommies' top highlights as they clinched their 15th-straight MIAC title - and 27th in the 30 years of the event - came in the pole vault and 4x200-meter relay. Abby Baier cleared the bar at 10-10.75 to win the pole vault, and the tandem of Mallory Burnham, Maggie Harris and Angela and Erika Tipp teamed up to win the 800-relay in 1:43.06. Burnham added a second-place finish in the 200-meter run a day after she set two meet records, winning both the 60-meter dash and 60-hurdles Friday.

St. Thomas also got third-place finishes from Olivia Khauv in the triple jump, Carly Barton in the 600-meter run, Erin Statz in the 3,000-meter run and the 4x400-meter relay team. The Tipp twins joined Burnham in a Tommie-heavy 200 final, with Erika coming in third and Angela finishing fourth.

Saturday's top two individual highlights came courtesy of the Cobbers in the field event from a pair of athletes who had finished as the runner-up in their respective pursuits the previous season. Cherae Reeves won the shot put with a new meet record 47-10 in both the prelims and the finals, which bettered the old mark set in 2013 by nearly three inches. Teammate Hilary Thompson tied the MIAC meet record in the triple jump Saturday, traveling a total distance of 38-6.75.

The runner-up Blazers were led by another magnificent performance by rookie runner Allison Kosobud. A day after she set a new meet record in the 800-meter run, Kosobud won another event, finishing first in a talented 1,000-meter run field with a time of 2:55.91. The Blazers added a third-place finish in the 4x200 meter relay Saturday to help secure its second-place finish.

Carleton completed its strong weekend with a top-three team finish thanks to another individual victory and several other All-MIAC performances Saturday. Ellie Wilson won the 600-meter run in 1:36.02 to lead the Knights' final-day showings. Carleton's Kao Sutton was the runner-up in the shot put and Colette Celichowski finished second in the 1K a day after winning the mile.

St. Olaf scored the other relay victory Saturday to help the team finish in the top four in the standings. The Ole tandem of Naomi Hesse, Shaina Rud, Moriah Novacinski and Dani Larson won the race in 4:02.45. Novacinski also finished third in the 1K for the second year in a row.

Hamline and Bethel also had a handful of highlights while joining the top five. Hamline got a second-place finish from each of the Saulsberry twins, with Carolyn coming in second in the triple jump and Marolyn finishing second in the 600, and Jessica Putland added a third-place finish in the shot put. The Royals got a winning performance from Ashley Magelssen in the 200, as she beat the UST trio with a first-place time of 25.67. The Royals also finished second in both of Saturday's relay races.

Another rookie had a great MIAC debut, as Macalester's Kimber Meyer ran to a win in the 3,000-meter run with a victorious time of 9:53.33. Augsburg's Lauren Rice was the runner-up in the 3K a day after winning the MIAC 5K title. Gustavus also had a great day in the pole vault, as Nevada Wendlandt and Kelsey Harms finished second and third.

There was a short awards ceremony following the conclusion of the meet to honor both team champions. The top three individuals in each event and the first-place relay team automatically earn All-Conference honors, and the 4th-through-6th place finishers in each open event and 2nd-through-6th place relay teams will all be named All-Conference Honorable Mention.
