MINNEAPOLIS --It was a record-breaking morning Friday at the
third session of the 2014 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (MIAC) Swimming and Diving Championships at the
University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. One MIAC record and another
meet record fell, and the two team leaders put themselves in
position for further success with strong showings in the prelim
races.
The top highlight of Friday morning's session came from a
breakout star in his first MIAC Championships. St. Thomas freshman
Mike Lanz set a new MIAC record in the men's 100-yard butterfly
prelim, finishing the race in 48.60. To add to the drama, St.
Olaf's Billy Brebrick - the defending champ and previous meet
record holder - finished second in 50.33. Brebrick's meet record
was 48.98, set in 2013, and the old MIAC record was 48.86, set by
Saint John's Matt Zelenz in 1999.

The Gustavus women continued their impressive performance at the
2014 MIAC meet, led by another record-setting performance by
reigning MIAC Women's Swimmer-of-the-Year Alissa Tinklenberg. The
senior set a new meet record in the women's 100-yard backstroke,
finishing first in 56.25. Tinklenberg is seeking her third-straight
title in the event, and only her MIAC-record time of 55.5 from
earlier this season is faster in conference history. She already
has one 2014 title, winning the 50-yard freestyle Thursday.
The Gusties displayed their staggering depth in the women's
400-individual medley prelim. Gustavus first-year swimmer Hayley
Booher recorded the prelim's top time of 4:34.24, which met the
NCAA B Cut, and teammates Abby Lyle and Kristi Podratz joined
Booher in the top three.
The Gusties also missed a record by the slimmest possible margin
Friday morning, as Jenny Strom led the women's 100-yard
breaststroke field with a 2013 NCAA Selection Time of 1:03.58.
Strom - seeking her third-straight title in the event and second
title of 2014 (she won the 500-free Thursday) - set the current
MIAC record in the prelims a year ago with a time of 1:03.57. St.
Catherine's Alex Zuelke was second, Gustavus' Laura Drake was third
and St. Thomas' Emily Punyko was fourth, and all met the B cut.

Gustavus got another great performance from another rookie, Dani
Klunk, in the women's 100-yard butterfly prelim. She finished with
a B-cut time of 57.35 to lead the field a day after she captured
the women's 200-IM title. St. Thomas' Courtney Grunewald was
second, and fellow Tommie Mariann Kukielka has the morning's
third-best time. Kukielka is the two-time defending champ in the
event, and she set a MIAC record of 56.63 earlier this season.
The St. Olaf men followed a great first day with another good
showing in the prelims, as a pair of defending champs put
themselves in position to repeat. Defending 400-yard individual
medley champ Spencer Scarth put himself in position to repeat with
Friday morning's top time of 4:11.14. Junior star Michael Gratz
also led the men's 100-yard backstroke field with a B-cut time of
50.52. Gratz will try to win his second-straight MIAC title in the
event Friday night. He won his third-straight men's 200-IM title
Thursday evening.
Another Ole, freshman Nick Wilkerson, met the NCAA B cut leading
the men's 100-yard breaststroke field with a time of 56.61.
Teammates Erik Money and Colby Kubat were second and third,
respectively, also with B cut times. Kubat is the three-time
defending champ and meet record holder in the event.
Macalester senior and reigning MIAC Women's Diver-of-the-Year
Renee Jordan had a tremendous morning, as the women's 3-meter
diving prelims took center stage in the diving pool. Jordan - the
defending champ on the 3-meter board - led the field by more than
60 points as she accumulated a score of 499.60 Friday morning.
Jordan, teammate Hunter Hedenberg and St. Catherine's Jenna Nagy
all met the NCAA 2013 Qualifying Score in Friday's prelims.
Other men's highlights included a great performance by Gustavus'
Zac Solis for the second-straight day. Solis led the men's 200-yard
freestyle field with a time of 1:42.78, edging out defending champ
Tanner Roe of St. Olaf who recorded the second-best time. Saint
John's Andrew Urness came in third in the prelims. Solis won the
men's 500-yard freestyle championship Thursday night, and Roe won
the 50-free in Session 2.
Carleton's Evan Harris met the NCAA B cut in the men's
100-breast, finishing fourth Friday morning. Gustavus sophomore
Dante Colucci also met the B cut in the men's 100-back with a time
of 50.56. A pair of St. Thomas teammates finished 2-3 in the men's
400-IM, as Chris Tri was the runner-up Friday morning, and Walker
Matthews finished less than half a second later.
On the women's side, St. Olaf's Maddie Lee met the NCAA B cut
while leading the women's 200-yard freestyle field with a time of
1:53.33. Gustavus' Leah Anderson finished second, and Carleton's
Milana Socha had the third-best time. Another Ole, Carolyn
Bernhardt, met the NCAA B cut in the women's 100-back, finishing
behind only Tinklenberg's meet record time.
