St. Thomas women, tight men's race highlight Friday's MIAC Indoor T&F meet

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The 2015 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships continued Friday at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., with the first full slate of track and field events. After a thrilling opening session, the men's race is shaping up to be a great one, while the St. Thomas women took an authoritative first step toward a 16th-straight conference title.

The Tommie men entered the 2015 meet as victors of each of the first 30 MIAC Indoor meets, but they're getting their toughest test yet as they hold just a slim four-point lead over St. Olaf - which dominated the distance events Friday - after the first full day of action. Meanwhile, the St. Thomas women won five individual events Friday to amass more than twice the points of second-place Bethel, and after one day UST has more total points than the second- and third-place teams combined.

In the men's team race, St. Thomas has 80 points to lead the way, but the Oles are right on the Tommies' heels with 76, which should set up a fantastic finish on Saturday. Carleton (49) holds a slim lead over host Concordia (41) and Hamline (40) for third place. Augsburg and Saint John's are tied for sixth with 31 points each, Bethel is just two points back of that duo with 29 and Gustavus (18) lead both Macalester (17) and Saint Mary's (17) by a point for ninth.

In the women's standings, the Tommies seized control of their quest for title No. 16 in a row with an impressive 108 points. Bethel sits in second place with 52 points, Hamline is third with 44 and Saint Benedict trails the Pipers by only three points in fourth with 41. The two Northfield schools - Carleton (36) and St. Olaf (34.5) - are neck-and-neck for fifth with host Concordia close behind with 30 points. Gustavus is eighth with 22.5, Macalester is ninth with an even 20, and St. Catherine (17), Augsburg (15) and Saint Mary's (nine) round out the final three spots after the first full day of action.

The St. Thomas women surged ahead so dramatically behind the five individual winners and nine All-Conference (top three individual, first-place relay) performances. Emily Gapinski (5:05.57) gave UST a win in one of the evening's most entertaining races, as she edged Carleton's Ruth Steinke (5:05.69) in the mile by less than a second. Angela Tipp (59.08) added a win in the 400-meter dash, Kayla Goeman (2:15.34) edged defending champion Allison Kosobud (Saint Benedict) in the 800-meter run, Gabrielle Pepin (17:26.11) won the 5,000-meter run by more than 40 seconds, and Olivia Khauv cleared the pole vault bar at 10-10.75 in the fewest number of attempts to come out on top of a four-way tie at that height.

The home team got its top women's highlight in the long jump as the Cobbers' Rochelle Hickerson traveled 18-2.5 to claim victory. Hamline's Jessica Putland claimed her second-straight MIAC title in the weight throw with her winning toss of 53-3.75, with teammate Erin Urbanowicz (51-2.75) coming in second. The Pipers also celebrated on the track, as Carolyn Saulsberry won the 60-meter hurdles in 9.09 seconds. Augsburg's Callie Jones (7.856) sprinted to a photo-finish victory over Bethel's Miriam Nordquist (7.865) in the 60-meter dash, and the Saint Benedict quartet of Jenna O'Donnell, Megan Sundstrom, Maria Kiminski and Manon Gammon-Deering won the distance medley relay in 12:35.327 to narrowly beat St. Thomas (12:35.332).

The men's day started a little earlier with the completion of the heptathlon. Carleton's Colby Seyferth continued a spectacular performance and led wire-to-wire, as he claimed the MIAC title with a final score of 4,654 points. Knights' teammate Evan McNeil (4,437) was the runner-up and Concordia's Gabe Wright gave the hometown fans reason to cheer with a top-three finish and 4,233 points. Seyferth finished in the top three in six of the seven events with the top mark in the 60-meter dash, long jump and shot put, the No. 2 mark in the 60-meter hurdles and pole vault and third-best mark in the high jump.

The Tommies' top individual highlight came in the 400-meter dash, as Brian Jarvey successfully defending his title in the event with a winning time of 49.37 seconds. Saturday, Jarvey will also try to become a two-time champ in the 200-meter dash. UST used its depth to sieze a narrow lead Friday, as it registered just two All-Conference performances, Jarvey and Michael Witschen, who was second in the long jump.

St. Olaf is in contention for the title after a dominant night on the track, with four first-place finishes and six All-Conference performances. Jake Campbell won a second-straight title in the 5K with a winning time of 14:40.93, and teammate Phillip Meyer finished second (14:41.85). The Oles also took the top two spots in the mile, with Paul Escher (4:18.05) in first and Joe Coffey (4:19.45) in second. Aaron Dunphy gave St. Olaf a win in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.48 seconds, and the Oles won the distance medley relay with a time of 10:33.25 thanks to the quartet of Coffey, Joey Pugh, Andy Rudberg and Grant Wintheiser.

There was one other repeat champ that successfully defended his title Friday, as Augsburg sprinter Undre Smith-Brewer again won the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.94. Concordia's Brandon Zylstra electrified the home crowd with a win in the long jump (22-7.75) and a runner-up finish in the high jump (6-8.25). Macalester's Logan Hovie was the high jump winner as he cleared the bar with a new facility record of 6-9.5.

Bethel's Bryce DeBoer won the weight throw (56-11.5) and Carleton got another first-place finish from rookie Donson Cook-Gallardo (1:54.87), who won the 800-meter run title by edging out defending champion Thomas Feichtinger (1:55.29) of Saint John's. Hamline had a trio of runner-up finishes Friday - Tom Larson in the 60, Joey Grussing in the weight throw and Eric Hanson in the hurdles - and Augsburg's Barinedum Kordah scored a pair of All-Conference honors in the long jump (third) and 400 (second).

The 2015 MIAC Indoor meet concludes Saturday with one more session and 10 more events for each gender. Saturday's final session starts with 10:15 a.m. field events and 12:30 p.m. track events. The meet's final event begins at 3:40 p.m., and there will be a short awards ceremony following the conclusion of the meet to honor both team champions.

The top three individuals in each event and the first-place relay team will automatically earn All-Conference honors, and the 4th-through-6th place finishers in each open event and 2nd-through-6th place relay teams will all be named All-Conference Honorable Mention.
