COON RAPIDS, Minn. -- The 2014 Minnesota Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (MIAC) Golf Championships started Saturday amid
unseasonably cold temperatures. Despite Mother Nature's lack of
cooperation, the first 18 holes made for a thrilling start to the
three-day tournament and the St. Thomas men, Bethel and St. Thomas
women soared to the top of the team leader boards in the first
round.
St. Thomas men started the tournament off strong with a combined
score of 304 (16+) after day one. Bethel and Gustavus followed
closely behind tied for second place with 307 (+19). Augsburg and
Saint John's both scored 309 (+21), sharing the fourth spot
overall. On the women's side, Bethel and St. Thomas ended the day
tied for first place with 322 (+34). St. Catherine shot 324 (+36),
securing a third place finish after day one. Carleton shot 325
(+37), good for a fourth place finish. Saint Benedict rounded out
the top five scoring 330 (+42).
Gustavus men's golfer Chris Captain set the bar high on day one
shooting one under par with a score of 71 (-1). Ryan Gallagher from
Saint John's and Alex Kapraun from St. Thomas tied for second and
finsihed on par with 72 (E). Bennett Schroeder from St. Thomas and
Coy Papachek from Concordia concluded the day tied for fourth with
74 (+2) strokes a piece. On the women's side, Maxine Carlson from
St. Olaf and Kaitlyn Alvarez from St. Catherine finished ahead of
the rest, ending the day with 77 (+5). Rachel Morris from St.
Thomas and Abby Conzemius from St. Catherine follow closely behind,
tied for third with 78 (+6) on the day. Rounding out the fifth
spot, Emily Thul from St. Thomas, Leah Swanson and Christine
Piwinica from Bethel shot 79 (+7) a piece and finish tied after day
one.
