COON RAPIDS, Minn. -- The 2014 Minnesota Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (MIAC) Golf Championships continued amid cold
temperatures Sunday at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids, Minn.
However, the action on the course was plenty warm, setting the
stage for Monday's thrilling conclusion to the three-day, 54-hole
tournament. The Carleton women surged into first place with a
tremendous performance in Sunday's second round, and the Bethel men
moved into the lead in an extremely competitive men's field, where
only five shots separates the top four teams.
The Knights, seeking their first-ever MIAC women's golf title,
were fourth after Saturday's first round, but shot up the leader
board by carding the best women's team score of the weekend by 10
shots. Carleton carded a 311 Sunday, which is the third-best
18-hole score in championship histroy, and their 36-hole total is
tied for the second-best mark. The Knights hold a seven-shot lead
over second-place Bethel after two days. The Royals actually shaved
a stroke off their first-day total with a 321 Sunday and are second
with a total of 643, with defending champion St. Thomas (647) and a
surprising St. Catherine team (653) rounding out Monday's final
pairing.
Saint Benedict (658) currently occupies the final spot in the
top five, and the Blazers will be paired with sixth-place Gustavus
(662), seventh-place St. Olaf (674) and eighth-place Concordia
(677) for Monday's final round. Macalester (701), Saint Mary's
(732) and Augsburg (748) round out the team standings after 36
holes, and that trio will lead off Monday's final round.
On the men's side, Bethel shot a tournament-low 302 as a
team Sunday to leap into first place with a two-day total of 609.
However, the men's championship is far from decided, as Gustavus
(612) and Saint John's (614) both shot 305 Sunday to stay in
contention. St. Thomas led after day one and the Tommies followed
with a 309 Sunday and are one shot ahead of the Johnnies in third
with a 613. Those final four, with just five shots separating them,
will all be paired together in Monday's final group, which should
result in a drama-filled day on the course.
Fifth-place Augsburg also isn't out of contention, as the
Auggies sit just 10 shots back of first-place Bethel with a two-day
total of 619 (309-310). Carleton has a total of 627 and is in sixth
place, with Concordia just four shots back of the Knights with 631.
Augsburg, the Knights and the Cobbers will all be paired together
Monday, as will St. Olaf (632), Macalester (643) and Saint Mary's
(667), as that trio will be the first team off the tee.
Individually, St. Thomas' Rachel Morris and Saint John's Ryan
Gallagher surged into the lead with their day two performances. The
individual races will carry similar drama into Monday's final
round, as just six shots separates the women's top 10 individuals,
and the difference between first and 10th on the men's side is just
eight shots.
Morris shot a 77 Sunday and has a 36-hole total of 155 to take a
two-shot lead over a quartet of players tied for second. St. Olaf's
Maxine Carlson (77-80), Carleton's Kelsey Moede (82-75), Bethel's
Christine Piwinica (79-78) and St. Catherine's Kaitlyn Alvarez
(77-80) are all square at 157 after two days.
Consistent, even par has been the story of Gallagher's success
so far, as his back-to-back 72s give him an even-par total of 144
after 36 holes and a three-shot lead over the rest of the field.
Day one leader Chris Captain of Gustavus is in second with a total
of 147 (71-76) with St. Thomas' Alex Kapraun in third at 148
(72-76), Carleton's Ned Rohrbach in fourth at 149 (75-74) and
Bethel's Bennett Smed rounds out the top five at 150
(76-74).
