COON RAPIDS, Minn. -- Monday's final 18 holes proved to be a
historic day for the Carleton College women's golf team. The
Knights carded a MIAC record 299 over the final round of the 2014
Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Women's Golf
Championships to pull away from the field and claim their
first-ever conference title in the sport. Carleton finished with a
54-hole record total of 935 for a convincing 21-shot victory.
The Knights won their fifth-straight tournament of the fall by
the comfortable final margin, but really caught fire over the final
two days. Head Coach Eric Sieger's team found itself in fourth
place, three shots back of the co-leaders, after the first day, but
Carleton used a 311 Sunday to surge into the lead by 10 shots after
36 holes. The Knights finished off their first women's golf
conference championship with Monday's final-round 299, which is a
MIAC Championships 18-hole record, and believed to be the first
time a MIAC women's team had ever broken 300 for an 18 hole round.
The Knights also set MIAC championship records for 36 holes with
its final two rounds (610) and its 54-hole total (935).
In addition, the Knights celebrated an individual victory, as
Grace Gilmore captured medalist honors with a one-over-par 73 over
the tournament's final day. She carded a total of 231 for the
tournament to win by a shot over teammate Shannon Holden and
Bethel's Christine Piwnica. Holden carded the lowest 18-hole round
of the tournament Monday at even par (72) and Piwnica shot a 75
Monday to also finish in the top two. Holden's 72 is tied for
the second-best 18 hole score in MIAC Championships history, with
Gilmore's 73 a shot behind in a tie for third.
Piwnica led Bethel to a second-place finish as the Royals carded
a 313 Monday and a tournament total of 956. St. Thomas was third
with a total of 964 a year after winning the title by a single shot
over the Knights. The next three teams were extremely close in the
final standings as Gustavus shot a 320 Monday to grab fourth with a
total of 982, Saint Benedict was two shots back in fifth at 985,
and St. Catherine had the best finish of its program's young
history with a total another shot back at 985
St. Olaf was solidly in seventh with a 333 Monday and a total of
1,007. Concordia finished eighth with a total of 1,022 (345 Monday)
and Macalester was in ninth at 1,044 with its best round of the
weekend Monday (343). Augsburg also improved by more than 20 shots
with a 346 Monday to move into 10th at 1,094, and Saint Mary's
(1,099 total, 367 Monday) rounded out the final spot in the
standings.
The rest of the individual top 10 included a pair of Tommies,
two Wildcats, an Ole, a Gustie, a Royal and another Knight. St.
Thomas' Rachel Morris finished fourth with a total score of 233,
with St. Olaf's Maxine Carlson and Bethel's Leah Swanson two shots
behind her at 235 and tied for fifth place. Carleton's Geraldine
Tellbuescher took seventh with a total of 237, St. Catherine's
Kaitlyn Alvarez was eighth at 238 and SCU's Abby Conzemius,
Gustavus' Jordan Drenttel and St. Thomas' Emily Thul all tied for
ninth with identical final scores of 242.
