MIAC Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Title IX The MIAC celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Title IX, the landmark federal law signed in 1972 that prohibits gender discrimination in educational programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance. Congress enacted Title IX of the Education Amendments Act, which President Richard Nixon signed into law on June 23, 1972. The landmark legislation states: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." The MIAC initiated women's competition in 1982 and has grown to now sponsor 11 women's championships in the sports of: women's soccer, women's cross country, women's golf, volleyball (women), women's hockey, women's basketball, women's swimming, women's indoor track, softball (women), women's tennis, and women's outdoor track. Over the month of November, the MIAC will recognize two women from each institution, who have played a role in continuing the progression of women's athletics. These pioneering individuals range from athletic administrators to coaches who have paved the way for women’s programs at their institution, conference, national level and throughout Minnesota.
