Cole Pengilly
went 4-for-5 with four runs batted in as the No. 6 seeded Gusties upset No. 3 Saint Mary's, 5-2, in the opening round of the 2018 MIAC Baseball Playoffs. The first-year shortstop was clutch at the plate, driving in the first two runs of the game in the top of the third inning. He brought another runner home in the fifth before singling with the bases loaded in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Defense did its job for the Gusties as well, as junior pitcher Adam Stockwell allowed just one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk in six and two-thirds innings. Junior catcher Dixon Irwin led Saint Mary's with two hits in three at-bats, while freshman phenom pitcher James Green went 6.1 innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs with six strikeouts for the Cards.

Drew Molin
was masterful on the mound, putting together a complete-game two-hitter to guide the Tommies to a 4-0 playoff win over Macalester on Thursday. The senior southpaw threw 128 pitches in nine innings of work, striking out 11 of the 32 batters he faced. Senior shortstop Jake Smith got the scoring started for St. Thomas in the bottom of the first inning when he tripled to right field, scoring Rock Cates. Smith crossed home plate following the next at-bat, when sophomore designated hitter Ryan Lust singled to left field for his first of two RBI in the game. Matthew Plisko was saddled with the loss after two innings on the mound for Macalester. Catcher Graham Low and rightfielder Sam Goldberg were the only Scots to manage hits off Molin. Both players also walked in the game.

Friday begins the double-elimination round, when the Gusties and Tommies return to CHS Field for matchups against the two top seeds in the tournament. No. 6 Gustavus will challenge No. 1 seed Saint John's at 3:00 p.m. while No. 4 St. Thomas will take on No. 2 Bethel under the Friday night lights at 7:00 p.m.

The victors of Friday's games will meet at noon on Saturday while the losers of the Friday contests will battle it out in an elimination game at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Whichever team comes out on top in the 3:30 p.m. contest will have little time to recover, as that squad will face the loser of the noon game in a second elimination matchup to decide the other championship qualifier at 7:00 p.m.

Sunday's MIAC Championship will begin at 11:00 a.m. If necessary, a second game will follow 30 minutes after the first to determine the double-elimination tournament winner. The champion will receive the MIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Baseball Tournament.
