COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University senior Joey Stock (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Prep) was selected for the Northwoods League's 2019 Major League Dreams Showcase Aug. 6 at the Madison Mallards' Warner Park in Madison, Wis.
The annual Major League Dreams Showcase consists of the NWL's top 75 players who were selected by a panel of Major League Baseball scouts. The players will participate in a day of workouts in front of scouts, followed by a doubleheader.
Stock is one of three pitchers from NCAA Division III to be selected for the showcase, including Quinn Gudaitis from the Mallards (Illinois Wesleyan) and Austin Smith of the Duluth Huskies (Southwestern).
He is currently in his second season with the St. Cloud Rox and touts a 0-1 record with three saves in nine relief appearances this summer. The hard-throwing Stock has 16 strikeouts in 13.1 innings pitched. He debuted for the Rox July 17, 2018, and totaled seven strikeouts in six appearances (5.2 innings). Stock went 1-1 with a 5.51 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 16.1 innings for the Johnnies this spring.
The first game at 4:05 p.m. will feature a mix of players from the Great Plains Division. The visiting team will be led by Stock's manager with the Rox, Augie Rodriguez, and is largely comprised of players from Bismarck, Duluth, St. Cloud and Willmar. Most of the home team will be made up of players from Eau Claire, La Crosse, Mankato, Rochester and Waterloo.
Stock was named to the American Baseball Coaches' Association (ABCA) and D3baseball.com All-Midwest Region first team this spring after leading the Johnnies in batting average (.353), slugging percentage (.706), on-base percentage (.467), extra-base hits (17) and RBI (39). He broke SJU's 19-year-old, single-season record for home runs with 12 this spring and was intentionally walked eight times, including five in the MIAC Tournament alone. His overall numbers were largely fueled by a 13-game stretch in which he batted .512 (22-for-43) with a 1.876 OPS, 10 home runs and 28 RBI. He reached base safely in each of the season's final 19 games.
In conference play, Stock led the MIAC in slugging percentage (.950) and home runs (9), finished second in RBI (26), third in batting average (.417) and seventh in both hits (25) and runs (15) despite playing in only 18 of the 20 league games. The nine homers in MIAC play were one away from the conference record. Stock's slugging percentage was second-best by a Johnnie in conference games, while the RBI and total bases (57) were third.
The Northwoods League is a 22-team, wood-bat summer baseball league for collegiate student-athletes. All players in the league must have NCAA eligibility remaining in order to participate. Players are not paid, so as to maintain their college eligibility.
