Auggies, Johnnies headed to MIAC Men's Hockey Playoff Championship

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The 2019 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Men's Hockey Playoffs continued on Saturday with a pair of semifinal contests.

No. 2 seed Saint John's advanced in the afternoon game with a 4-1 victory over rival St. Thomas, while top-seeded Augsburg defeated Saint Mary's, 8-1, on Saturday night. Augsburg is the defending MIAC Playoff champs, having won the postseason crown each of the last three seasons.

Augsburg defeated Saint John's once and the two teams skated to a 2-2 tie in the regular season series. Augsburg - the only team in MIAC history to win three consecutive Playoff championships in men's hockey - began its current run with a 5-4 victory over the Johnnies in the 2016 title game. SJU has not been back until now and will be looking for the program's first playoff championship since 2013 next weekend.

Saint John's earned its first trip to the MIAC Playoff Championship in three seasons with a 4-1 victory over St. Thomas on Saturday afternoon in St. Cloud. Seniors Sean Lang and Evan Okeley each scored two goals apiece in the game, while goaltender Andrew Lindgren recorded 39 saves in the win. Both Lang and Okeley made the Johnnie power-plays count, combining to score goals on two of the team's five man-advantage opportunities. Though the Tommies outshot Saint John's 40-21 in the game, Luke Radetic's unassisted goal late in the second period was the only scoring for UST on the afternoon.

Luke Dietsch recorded a hat trick while Alex Rodriguez punched in two goals of his own as the top-seeded Auggies rolled to an 8-1 victory over No. 5 seed Saint Mary's in the MIAC Semifinals on Saturday. A staggering 12 different Auggies figured in the scoring with five different Augsburg players finding the back of the net in the win. Augsburg scored twice in the first five minutes of the game to go up 2-0 but a power-play goal by SMU's Kyle Meeh just before the buzzer sounded cut the Auggies' lead in half heading into the first intermission. It was all Augsburg from that point forward, as five second-period goals put the game out of reach. Augsburg goalie Nick Schmit spent 51:52 between the pipes and recorded 17 saves on 18 shots faced.

No. 1 Augsburg and No. 2 Saint John's will square off the following Saturday, March 2, in the 2019 MIAC Men's Hockey Playoff Championship game, which will be played at Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis on the home ice of the Auggies. The puck is tentatively scheduled to drop at 7:00 p.m. The tournament champion will receive the postseason championship plaque and the Conference's automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Tournament.
