Royals top Scots to advance in MIAC Men's Tennis Playoffs

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The quarterfinal round of the 2019 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Men's Tennis Playoffs commenced on Tuesday with the No. 5 seed Bethel Royals defeating the No. 4 seed Macalester Scots, 5-3, at Lifetime Fitness in Bloomington, Minn.

Bethel became the first five seed to advance in the tournament since the 2013 season with a victory on Tuesday. The Royals claimed two of three points in doubles play and rallied for a trio of singles wins to move on to the semifinals. Senior Hunter Fernelius accounted for two of the team's five points in the win, teaming with Jason Reilly for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles and defeating the Scots' Sam Hochberger in a three-set thriller, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, at No. 1 singles. For Macalester, Matthew Yang earned victories at No. 6 singles and No. 2 doubles with partner Peter Willenborg.

Bethel now advances to the MIAC Semifinals where the Royals will challenge regular season conference champion Gustavus in St. Peter at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. The No. 2 seeded Carleton Knights will host No. 3 Saint John's at 4:00 p.m. in the second semifinal matchup. The two semifinal winners will meet Saturday at 1:00 p.m. on the court of the highest remaining seed to decide the 2019 MIAC Men's Tennis Playoff Champion.
