BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – For the third time in the last four years and ninth time in the last 13, Gustavus Adolphus College will host Carleton College in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Men's Tennis Playoff Championship.

The nation's No. 16-ranked team won all three doubles matches and added victories at the second and sixth singles spots to defeat No. 5 seed Bethel by a 5-0 margin on Thursday. Senior Chase Johnson accounted for two of the Gusties' five points on the day, teaming with partner Patrick Whaling for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles and coming away with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at the No. 2 singles spot. The Gusties have won eight consecutive MIAC Playoff championships and appeared in every title match since the tournament moved to its current format in 2007.

The No. 38-ranked Carleton Knights defeated Saint John's, 8-1, in Northfield on Thursday afternoon. Aaron Goodman and Sahil Chhugani each accounted for a pair of points for Carleton, with Goodman winning at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles alongside partner Xander Zuczek, while Chhugani teamed with Jonas Lindholm-Uzzi for a win at third doubles and added another point at fifth singles. The tandem of Thomas Gillach and Nate Jordre pulled off an 8-6 victory over the nationally-ranked team of Jordon O'Kelly and Leo Vithoontien at No. 1 doubles to secure the lone point for SJU. Carleton will be making its 10th championship match appearance since 2007. The Knights upset Gustavus to win the playoff title in 2010 - the Gusties' only loss to a conference foe since the 1986 campaign.
The 2019 MIAC Men's Tennis Championship will be played Saturday, May 4 at 1:00 p.m. in St. Peter. The tournament champ will receive the MIAC Playoff championship plaque and the Conference's automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament.
