Bats power Tommies, Wildcats to victory in MIAC Softball Playoffs

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – While a pair of pitching duels highlighted Thursday's action in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Softball Playoffs, the bats came alive on Friday where fans were treated to a combined 12 runs scored at South Field in St. Paul. Top-seeded St. Thomas defeated No. 5 St. Olaf, 6-0, and No. 3 St. Catherine topped No. 2 Saint Benedict, 4-2.

The Tommies jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, defeating the Oles, 6-0, in the opening game of the double-elimination round on Friday. UST's Elise Barnes and Dana Connelly each batted in a pair, while Tommie pitchers Hayley Dunning and Sammy Hogan combined for a four-hit shutout. Less than 24 hours removed from tossing a 15-K no-hitter, Julie Graf threw five more innings for the Oles, striking out two.

The third time proved to be the charm, as St. Kate's shook off a sweep at the hands of Saint Ben's earlier in the week to top CSB, 4-2, on Friday. Shortstop Kylie Macziewski scored twice, while pitcher Krista Flugstad tossed her second complete game in as many days to guide the Wildcats to victory. Down 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh, CSB infielder Claire Boatman belted a two-run shot over the left field fence to cut the deficit in half, but the late-game rally was halted shortly thereafter. Saint Benedict centerfielder Kate Deming led all batters with three hits in the game.

St. Thomas and St. Catherine will match up against each other tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m., with the winner advancing to the MIAC Playoff Championship Game on Sunday. St. Olaf and Saint Benedict will take the field at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday in an elimination game. At 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, the winner of the elimination contest will matchup with the loser of the 11:00 a.m. game with a spot in the Championship on the line.

The championship game is set for Sunday at 11 a.m., with a second game – if necessary – immediately following. The winner of the MIAC Softball Playoffs will receive the conference's automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Division III Softball Tournament.
