NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women's tennis team is headed to the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament as playoff champions of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) after defeating Bethel University by a margin of 5-2 on Sunday afternoon.
The victory was the Knights' fourth playoff championship all-time and the first for the program since 2014. The nation's No. 27-ranked team swept doubles play and picked up a pair of singles victories against Bethel, a team ranked No. 38 in the country and making its first playoff championship appearance in school history.
A pair of nationally-ranked doubles teams squared off at the No. 1 spot, with Kristina Conrad and Madeline Prins earning an 8-3 victory over Grace and Maggie Riermann. Jeanny Zhang and Faith Yim recorded an 8-6 victory over Mackenzie Novak and Jill Weinzettel at the No. 2 doubles spot, while Sonya Romanenko and Elizabeth Yim logged an 8-5 triumph over Sydney Rott and Meghan Schuler at the No. 3 position.
Bethel climbed back from its 3-0 deficit with strong singles action, as the Riermann sisters both claimed big victories at the top two spots against regionally-ranked opponents in Romanenko and Zhang. Carleton would rally back, however, with Prins and Faith Yim picking up singles wins at Nos. 4 and 5 to clinch the MIAC title.
A short awards ceremony followed Sunday's match, as Carleton was presented with its MIAC Playoff championship plaque. The Knights also received the Conference's automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament. The complete Tournament bracket will be announced Monday on NCAA.com.
