MIAC announces 2022 Women’s Soccer Awards

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its annual women’s soccer awards on Thursday.

Carleton junior forward Casey MacVeagh was selected by conference coaches as the MIAC Offensive Player of the Year, while the Knights’ junior defender Piper Dean earned MIAC Defensive Player of the Year honors. Carleton midfielder Ashlyn Haigh and St. Olaf midfielder Cat Duffy-Shaw shared MIAC Rookie of the Year honors. Knights head coach Jessica Mueller was celebrated by her peers as the MIAC Coach of the Year.

MacVeagh (Jr. | Thetford, Vt. | Thetford Academy) received MIAC Offensive Player of the Year honors thanks to six goals and a MIAC-best seven assists against conference opponents in 2022. MacVeagh averaged 1.73 points per game in league contests, tied for the highest-average among all MIAC field players. She is the first Carleton player to receive the award since it was established in 2015.

Dean (So. | Arlington, Va. | Yorktown) earned MIAC Defensive Player of the Year honors after helping the Knights to a 0.64 goals against average per game in 2022. Dean’s impact propelled the Knights to a league-best six shutouts in 11 conference games while holding MIAC opponents to no more than two goals in any contest. She is the first Carleton player to receive MIAC Defensive Player of the Year distinction in women’s soccer.

Duffy-Shaw (Fy. | Minneapolis, Minn. | Academy of Holy Angels) received Co-Rookie of the Year distinction after making 11 starts for the Oles in her first season of college soccer. Duffy-Shaw took 33 shots against conference opponents with 15 of them on-goal. Both figures ranked among the top 10 in the conference. She is the first Ole to receive MIAC Rookie of the Year honors in women’s soccer.

Haigh (Fy. | Kalamazoo, Mich. | Portage Central) was named Co-Rookie of the Year after starting all 11 conference games in her debut season for the Knights. Ten of her 16 shots on the season were on-goal and translated into two goals and a pair of assists as a holding midfielder. Haigh is the first Knight to receive MIAC Rookie of the Year honors in women’s soccer.

Mueller (second season) was recognized by her peers as MIAC Coach of the Year for the first time in her career after guiding Carleton to its fourth regular season conference championship in program history and the first since 2011. The Knights went 8-0-3 in conference play during the regular season and clinched a berth in the MIAC Playoffs for the eighth time in program history.

In addition to the individual awards, 22 players were named All-Conference and 15 received honorable mention distinction. All awards were nominated by and voted on by the 12 MIAC head women’s soccer coaches; any nominated player not selected as All-Conference but still receiving votes from at least three coaches was named honorable mention.

Eight of the 22 All-Conference selections were also selected in 2021. St. Catherine senior forward Lauren Witte became the 18th player in recorded MIAC history to be named All-Conference four times in women’s soccer, while Wildcat teammates Sofia Campbell and Amanda Elton joined St. Olaf senior Tessa Anderson in becoming three-time All-MIAC honorees - a feat achieved by just 58 women’s soccer players ever.
