MIAC Athletes of the Week - April 18, 2023

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners for outdoor track & field and golf on Tuesday. Student-athletes from Carleton, Gustavus, Saint Benedict, St. Catherine, and St. Olaf claimed the Conference's weekly honors.

The MIAC Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by the Conference's sports information directors and selected by MIAC staff. Throughout the spring season, team sports (baseball, softball, and tennis) Athletes of the Week will be recognized on Monday afternoons, with individual sports (outdoor track & field and golf) announced on Tuesday afternoons. The winners of the latest Athlete of the Week awards are listed below, along with details on their outstanding performances.

MIAC Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week
Will Kelly
St. Olaf College

Will Kelly ran NCAA Division III's fourth-fastest time in the country in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Bryan Clay Invite on 4/13, clocking in at 8:58.95. The junior's time ranks second on St. Olaf's all-time list, is just 20 seconds off the pace of the MIAC record, and is just over three seconds outside the top-25 all-time performer list in NCAA Division III history. Kelly also competed in the 5,000-meter run and finished with the MIAC's third-fastest time this season at 14:23.97.

Demetri Lord

Demetri Lord compiled a top-15 decathlon score in NCAA Division III this season at the Bryan Clay Invite, finishing seventh in his group with a score of 6,054 points. The junior's score ranks 14th in the country, first in the MIAC, and ninth on St. Olaf's all-time list. As the lone Division III competitor in his group, Lord set personal-bests in the 100-meter dash (11.02), 400-meter run (51.89), and 1,500-meter run (4:49.62).


MIAC Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week
Fiona Smith
College of Saint Benedict

Fiona Smith placed fifth in the 10,000-meter run at the 63rd Annual Mt. SAC Relays on 4/12. Smith broke both the program and MIAC records in the event with a time of 33:23.89. The previous MIAC mark was 34:22.58 set by Debbie Thometz of St. Thomas in 1983. Her time ranks second in NCAA Division III this season.

MIAC Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week
Annika Poe
Gustavus Adolphus College

Annika Poe won the shot put at the Bethel Invitational over the weekend with a throw of 13.65 meters (44' 9.5"), a whole two meters better than the rest of the field. Poe's mark is the best in the conference this season and currently ranks 12th in NCAA Division III.


MIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week
Anderson Murphy
Carleton College

Anderson Murphy earned medalist honors at the Howl at the Hill tournament hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan on 4/16-17. Murphy carded a 74 in the first round and followed that up with a 77 in the final round for a 36-hole total of 151 (+7). This was the second tournament victory of his career and first since September 2019. With Murphy leading the way, Carleton topped the 10-team field by eight shots, giving the Knights their first tournament triumph also since September 2019.

Morgan Anderson

Morgan Anderson led the Wildcats to a first-place finish at the Kathy Niepagen Spring Fling on 4/15-16, carding a career-low 147 (+3) to finish third individually. Anderson's score helped the Wildcats defeat top-ranked Emory as well as No. 3-ranked WashU as St. Catherine secured its second consecutive team victory while tying the tournament's 36-hole record of 601.
