BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced the 2023 MIAC Men's Tennis Awards on Tuesday.
Carleton sophomore Tarm Rojanasoonthon was the inaugural recipient of the MIAC Men’s Tennis Singles Player of the Year award, while the Gustavus senior duo of Nick Aney and Daniel Fouchier received the conference’s first Doubles Team of the Year honor. St. Olaf first-year Bogdan Vizoli was named the inaugural Rookie of the Year and Gustavus head coach Tommy Valentini was named the Steve Wilkinson Head Coach of the Year for men’s tennis.
Gustavus senior Daniel Fouchier was also selected as the 2023 MIAC Arthur Ashe Award winner. The award annually recognizes a senior men's tennis student-athlete who exhibits outstanding sportsmanship and exemplary athletic, academic, and humanitarian accomplishments.
Rojanasoonthon (Bangkok, Thailand | Chulalongkorn) was named the MIAC Singles Player of the Year after compiling a perfect 6-0 record at No. 1 singles for the conference runner-up Carleton Knights. His six victories at the top singles spot tied for the most in the MIAC this season. Rojanasoonthon finished the regular season at the No. 1-ranked singles player in NCAA Region VII.
Aney (Rochester, Minn. | Century) and Fouchier (Nootdorp, Netherlands | International School of Dusseldorf) received Doubles Team of the Year honors after going undefeated in conference matches in 2022-23. The tandem played at the top doubles spot for the MIAC champion Gusties and wrapped up the regular season as the No. 1-ranked doubles team in NCAA Region VII.
Fouchier was also the recipient of the prestigious MIAC Arthur Ashe Award. The senior standout has won more than 100 combined singles and doubles matches in his Gustavus career; however, his impact has been felt beyond the court as well.
“Daniel Fouchier is the consummate leader, a fierce, positive, sportsmanlike, and mature competitor, a model student, and a young man dedicated to living a life of service,” Gustavus head coach Tommy Valentini said. “He plays and lives in the spirit of Arthur Ashe by focusing on what is within his control and serving others at every turn.”
Fouchier has maintained a 3.86 grade point average and been selected to the Gustavus Dean’s List for three consecutive years while majoring in International Management and minoring in Computer Science. He has also been a key contributor to our team’s participation in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life fundraising efforts for cancer research and volunteers to put on tennis tournaments and mentor junior tennis players in his home country of the Netherlands. Fouchier is the Gusties' seventh MIAC Arthur Ashe Award recipient since 1999.
Vizoli (Woodbury, Minn.) was selected as the MIAC Rookie of the Year for men’s tennis after going 7-2 in conference singles matches - including five wins at No. 1 singles - and adding four wins at the top doubles position. His seven singles victories are tied for the most in conference play this season.
Valentini (14th season) was celebrated by his peers as the Steve Wilkinson Coach of the Year for men’s tennis after guiding the Gusties to a perfect season in conference play and the team’s 34th consecutive regular-season league crown. Valentini was previously recognized as MIAC Coach of the Year in 2012, 2014, and 2016. The award is named in honor of Steve Wilkinson, who spent 39 years (1971-2009) at the helm of the Gustavus men’s tennis program, retiring with the most overall victories (929) in the history of collegiate men’s tennis.
The 2023 MIAC Men's Tennis All-Conference Singles and Doubles teams were also recognized. The All-Conference team is selected based on performance during conference dual matches, with the top 18 players (including ties) recognized for both singles and doubles. A player must play in five conference matches at any position to be eligible for the honor. Coaches also voted on honorable mention selections.
Awards are nominated by and voted on by the MIAC head men's tennis coaches and only statistics from MIAC matches are considered for conference honors; any nominated player not selected as All-Conference but still receiving votes from at least three coaches was named honorable mention.
The MIAC also announced the inaugural All-Playoff Team for men's tennis, which recognized the top eight performers from the conference tournament, as selected by playoff-participant head coaches.
