MIAC Athletes of the Week - September 11, 2023

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners for football, volleyball, and soccer on Monday. Student-athletes from Augsburg, Concordia, Gustavus, Macalester, St. Catherine, and Saint John's claimed the Conference's weekly honors.

The MIAC Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by the Conference's sports information directors and selected by MIAC staff. Throughout the fall season, team sports (football, soccer and volleyball) Athletes of the Week will be recognized on Monday afternoons, with individual sports (cross country and golf) announced on Tuesday afternoons. The winners of the latest Athlete of the Week awards are listed below, along with details on their outstanding performances.

MIAC Football Offensive Player of the Week
Michael Nadeau
Macalester College

Michael Nadeau set a new program record with eight touchdown passes in the Scots' 56-27 victory at Martin Luther on 9/9. Nadeau was 29-of-40 for 542 yards, eight touchdowns, and two interceptions. The previous school record was six scoring strikes, tied by Nadeau last season and set by Cody Petrich in 2018. Nadeau's performance, combined with last week’s 44-30 win over Minnesota Morris in which he threw five touchdown passes, helped the Scots score 100 points in their first two games of the season for the first time in the program's history.

Henry Detmer recorded an interception, a fumble recover, and a sack in the Knights' 45-24 comeback victory over Pomona-Pitzer on 9/9. Detmer's 99-yard third-quarter pick-six accounted for the go-ahead score in the game. He stepped in front of the receiver and raced up the sideline for the longest interception return across all divisions of NCAA football this season. Detmer also had 8.0 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack, to go along with a first-quarter fumble recovery on the one-yard line to prevent another potential Pomona-Pitzer score.

Stuart DeMerit scored the decisive touchdown on a 93-yard field goal block in the Cobbers' 26-21 win over Pacific Lutheran on 9/9. The 93-yard return after a blocked field goal is the longest in program history. The blocked field goal attempt came with Concordia clinging to a 13-7 lead in the third quarter.


MIAC Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week
Adisa Preston
Macalester College

Eden Prairie, Minn.

Adisa Preston averaged 3.94 kills and 2.50 digs per set in a 4-0 week for the Scots. In a four-set win at Martin Luther on 9/6, Preston registered 13 kills and had five service aces. Over the weekend, Preston was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Macalester Invitational after leading the Scots to three victories. Preston tallied nine kills and 12 digs in a 3-1 win over Buena Vista on 9/8 and added a career-best 19 kills to go with 14 digs and four aces in a five-set win over Grinnell in the first match on 9/9. Preston topped her career high in the second match of the day with 22 kills in a 3-0 sweep of Luther.

MIAC Volleyball Specialty Player of the Week

Kasie Tweet helped the Gusties go 4-0 at the Augsburg Invitational over the weekend, compiling 148 total assists, including a pair of 41-assist performances. Tweet added 57 total digs, earning a trio of double-doubles in the process. Tweet tallied 41 assists against both UW-La Crosse (9/8) and UW-Eau Claire (9/9) in addition to a season-high 20 digs against the Eagles. Tweet also posted a season-best five service aces against Edgewood on 9/9.


MIAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

Mitchel Munzing scored three goals with three assists for nine points in a pair of Auggie nonconference victories last week. Munzing had a goal and an assist in the Auggies' 4-1 victory over Northwestern-St. Paul on 9/5 and scored two goals with two assists in a rout of UM-Morris on 9/9. Augsburg has now outscored its opponents by a 19-4 margin in its first four games, going 3-0-1 during the stretch.

MIAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Evan Siefken
Saint John's University

Evan Siefken allowed one goal and made 21 saves in 270 minutes of play as the Johnnies went 2-0-1 last week. The lone goal allowed came 15:46 into the eventual 1-1 tie at Loras on 9/9, which snapped Siefken’s shutout streak at 286:18. Siefken and the Johnnies posted shutouts of Wisconsin-Superior (1-0 on 9/5) and Dubuque (2-0 on 9/8).


MIAC Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Megan Hensel
Augsburg University

Megan Hensel scored two goals with two assists for six points in a pair of Auggie victories last week. Hensel scored two first-half goals in the Auggies' 4-0 victory over UW-Superior on 9/6. She then added two assists in the first 11:33 of play, as Augsburg scored a 3-2 victory at Bethany Lutheran on 9/9. Hensel is part of an Augsburg attack that has outscored its opponents by a 15-3 margin in its first four victories.

Kate Praetz
St. Catherine University

Bolinbrook, Ill.

Kate Praetz tallied two shutouts in three games for the Wildcats last week, becoming the program's all-time shutouts leader in the process. Praetz made 12 saves with one goal allowed against Pomona-Pitzer on 9/8. She also had four saves in a 1-0 shutout at UW-Eau Claire on 9/5 and one save in a 5-0 shutout at UM-Morris on 9/9.
