MIAC Athletes of the Week - January 16, 2024

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners for swimming & diving and indoor track & field Tuesday. Student-athletes from Gustavus, Hamline, and St. Olaf claimed the Conference's weekly honors.

The MIAC Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by the Conference's sports information directors and selected by MIAC staff. Throughout the winter season, team sports (basketball, hockey) Athletes of the Week will be recognized on Monday afternoons, with individual sports (swimming & diving, indoor track & field) announced on Tuesday afternoons. The winners of the latest Athlete of the Week awards are listed below, along with details on their outstanding performances.

MIAC Men's Swimming Athlete of the Week
Matt Strom
Gustavus Adolphus College

Matt Strom led the Gusties to a dual meet win versus Carleton on 1/12. Strom played a role in four different Gustavus victories, winning the 100 backstroke (52.68), 200 backstroke (1:59.26), and 500 free (4:56.36), and was a part of the winning 200 medley team that finished in 1:36.61.


MIAC Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week
Lucy Peterson
Gustavus Adolphus College

Lucy Peterson won two events for the Gusties in their dual against Carleton on 1/12. Peterson finished first in the 50 free by clocking in at 25.16, in addition to winning the 100 free in 54.92.


MIAC Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week
Will Kelly
St. Olaf College

Golf, Ill. | Glenbrook South

Will Kelly ran the seventh-fastest 3,000-meter time in NCAA Division III this season with a personal-best 8:28.17 at the Bearson/Gathje Classic on 1/12. His converted time of 8:22.33 was good for the event win and ranks seventh on St. Olaf's all-time list.

MIAC Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week
Logan Marzinske
Gustavus Adolphus College

St. Clair, Minn.

Logan Marzinske won the pole vault at the Gusties' home Black & Gold Showcase meet on 1/13, clearing a meet record distance of 4.10 meters (13' 5.25"). His distance ranks second in the MIAC this season.


MIAC Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week
Lauren Walda
St. Olaf College

Lauren Walda ran a personal-best time of 10:20.16 to win the 3,000-meter run by more than 15 seconds at the Bearson/Gathje Classic on 1/12. That time is the fastest in the MIAC this season and the converted time of 10:14.89 ranks 15th in NCAA Division III.

MIAC Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week
Molly Meyers
Hamline University

Marshfield, Wis.

Molly Meyers won the shot put at the St. Thomas Opener on 1/12 with a distance of 12.92 meters (42' 4.75"). The mark leads the MIAC this season, ranks 16th in NCAA Division III, and is the eighth-best in Hamline program history.
