Final-day drama will set 2013 MIAC Soccer Playoff fields

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The 2013 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) men's and women's soccer seasons conclude Saturday, and numerous teams for both genders still have much to play for, with the women's championship and seven of the eight total Playoff seeds still up in the air.

Heading into the final weekend, there is one definitive conclusion in the MIAC soccer landscape. Gustavus Adolphus College is the MIAC men's regular season champion and will be the No. 1 seed in the 2013 MIAC Men's Soccer Playoffs. Head Coach Mike Middleton's Gusties have had a superb season with a 12-2-1 overall record and a perfect 9-0 MIAC mark (27 points) to lock up the title and top seed. Gustavus goes for a perfect 10-0 conference sweep Saturday when it hosts Hamline at 1 p.m.

However, there will be much more drama in a few other MIAC locations on the men's side Saturday. First of all, the No. 2 seed and semifinal hosting duties are on the line in Northfield as rivals Carleton (13-1-3, 7-1-1 MIAC, 22 points) and St. Olaf (13-3-1, 6-2-1 MIAC, 19 points) meet at 1 p.m. Both have already secured spots in the Playoffs, but their seeds will be determined by Saturday's result. Carleton is No. 2 with a win or tie, and No. 3 with a loss. St. Olaf will be No. 2 with a win, No. 3 with a tie or a loss and a Saint John's loss or tie, or No. 4 with a loss and a Saint John's win.

The Johnnies hold the inside track on the final Playoff spot. SJU travels to Concordia and can punch its ticket with a win or a tie. Saint John's would also join the field with a loss if Augsburg also loses or ties. The Auggies are the only other team with a shot at the postseason, and would need a home win against St. Thomas and a Saint John's loss to get in.

The women's side has many more twists and turns heading into the final day of the regular season. Only Saint Benedict (13-2-1, 8-2 MIAC, 24 points) has secured a Playoff spot at this point, and the Blazers will face second-place Concordia (11-5-1, 7-2-1 MIAC, 22 points) Saturday in Moorhead with the winner taking home the 2013 MIAC Championship and the No. 1 seed. The Cobbers could fall anywhere from first to out of the postseason - they're No. 1 with a win, in with a tie, but would need some help with a loss.

Third-place Macalester (11-4-1, 7-3 MIAC, 21 points) also has a good shot at getting in. The Scots need either a win or a tie Saturday against Saint Mary's to punch their ticket to the MIAC Playoffs. A loss wouldn't eliminate Macalester, but it would need some help in Saturday's other games to still qualify for one of the four seeds.

Augsburg (10-3-4, 6-3-1 MIAC, 19 points), St. Olaf (8-6-2, 6-3-1 MIAC, 19 points) and Carleton (8-8-1, 6-4 MIAC, 18 points) are all also still in the mix for a Playoff spot. The Oles an Knights square off in an all-important game on Carleton's home field, while Augsburg is at St. Thomas. Augsburg controls its own destiny, as a win would put the Auggies in the field. The St. Olaf-Carleton winner would need Augsburg to either tie or lose to join the postseason.

Even with a win over Augsburg Saturday, St. Thomas (9-7-1, 5-4-1 MIAC, 16 points) would still trail either Carleton or St. Olaf, so the Tommies can only play the role of spoiler Saturday. Hamline (8-6-3, 5-4-1 MIAC, 16 points) also would fall just short of the postseason with a win Saturday.

Once Saturday's action is complete, the 2013 MIAC Soccer Playoff fields will be set, and the seeds and postseason matchups will be announced on the MIAC web site. The Playoffs will begin with the women's semifinals on Tuesday, Nov. 5. The men's semifinals will follow on Wednesday, Nov. 6, with both championships set for Saturday, Nov. 9. The winner of each tournament will receive the MIAC's automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Division III Soccer Tournament.

The MIAC has a home page for both the men's and women's soccer postseason tournaments, which will be updated with the most current information as seeds and matchups are secured, and throughout the course of each tournament. Fans can also follow the final day of regular-season action and the MIAC Playoffs on the MIAC scoreboard, or with the free MIAC app for smart phones and tablets.
