Gustavus earned the MIAC's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. The Gusties won their first-ever national championship after defeating UW-River Falls (2-1) in the national quarterfinals, Plattsburgh State (3-2, 2OT) in the national semifinals, and Amherst (2-1, 3OT) in the national championship. Gustavus became the first MIAC team and first NCAA West Region team to win a national championship in women's hockey. The national championship was the longest game in NCAA Division III women's hockey championship history, being decided in triple-overtime. No other championship game had gone past one overtime period. |
