MIAC announces 2022 Men’s Cross Country Awards

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its men's cross country awards on Thursday. Augsburg first-year Mohammed Bati was selected as the recipient of both the MIAC Athlete and Rookie of the Year awards, while St. Olaf head coach Brian Power was celebrated by his peers as the MIAC Coach of the Year.

Bati (Fy. | Dodala, Ethiopia | GAP School) earned MIAC Athlete of the Year honors after becoming the first Auggie ever to win the men’s individual title at the MIAC Cross Country Championships. Bati placed first out of 169 runners at the meet with an 8K time of 24:26.4. He also became the inaugural recipient of the MIAC Rookie of the Year award for men’s cross country. Bati competed in six races during his debut season, winning five of them.

Power (3rd season) was named Coach of the Year for the first time in his career after guiding the Oles to the 10th MIAC title in program history and St. Olaf's first since 2016. St. Olaf placed seven runners among the top 16 finishers at the 2022 MIAC Men's Cross Country Championships, including four of the top 10 runners for a 27-point margin of victory. Power joins Bill Thorton (2004) and Phil Lundin (2008, 2012-16) as St. Olaf men’s cross country coaches to be selected MIAC Coach of the Year.

In addition to the top individual honors, the MIAC Men's Cross Country All-Conference and Honorable Mention runners were also recognized. The top 15 finishers in Saturday's MIAC Championship race received All-Conference honors, while finishers 16-25 received Honorable Mention. The 2022 All-MIAC honorees include 10 first-time recipients, as only five of this year’s All-Conference runners had previously placed in the top 25 at the conference meet. Of that group, only three - St. Olaf’s Logan Bocovich, Saint John’s Lloyd Young, and St. Scholastica’s Lars Dewall - earned All-Conference status a season ago.
